A

Abel

Abel. Watchfulness; self-offering; surrendering to the creator the early fruits of experience.

from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, page 579

Abraham

Abraham. Fidelity; faith in the divine Life and in the eternal Principle of being. This patriarch illustrated the purpose of Love to create trust in good, and showed the life-preserving power of spiritual understanding.

from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, page 579

Adam

Adam. Error; a falsity; the belief in "original sin," sickness, and death; evil; the opposite of good, — of God and His creation; a curse; a belief in intelligent matter, finiteness, and mortality; "dust to dust;" red sandstone; nothingness; the first god of mythology; not God's man, who represents the one God and is His own image and likeness; the opposite of Spirit and His creations; that which is not the image and likeness of good, but a material belief, opposed to the one Mind, or Spirit; a so-called finite mind, producing other minds, thus making "gods many and lords many" (I Corinthians viii. 5); a product of nothing as the mimicry of something; an unreality as opposed to the great reality of spiritual existence and creation; a so-called man, whose origin, substance, and mind are found to be the antipode of God, or Spirit; an inverted image of Spirit; the image and likeness of what God has not created, namely, matter, sin, sickness, and death; the opposer of Truth, termed error; Life's counterfeit, which ultimates in death; the opposite of Love, called hate; the usurper of Spirit's creation, called self-creative matter; immortality's opposite, mortality; that of which wisdom saith, "Thou shalt surely die."

The name Adam represents the false supposition that Life is not eternal, but has beginning and end; that the infinite enters the finite, that intelligence passes into non-intelligence, and that Soul dwells in material sense; that immortal Mind results in matter, and matter in mortal mind; that the one God and creator entered what He created, and then disappeared in the atheism of matter.

from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, pages 579 to 580

Adversary

Adversary. An adversary is one who opposes, denies, disputes, not one who constructs and sustains reality and Truth. Jesus said of the devil, "He was a murderer from the beginning, ... he is a liar and the father of it."

This view of Satan is confirmed by the name often conferred upon him in Scripture, the "adversary."

from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, page 580

When the first symptoms of disease appear, dispute the testimony of the material senses with divine Science. Let your higher sense of justice destroy the false process of mortal opinions which you name law, and then you will not be confined to a sick-room nor laid upon a bed of suffering in payment of the last farthing, the last penalty demanded by error. "Agree with thine adversary quickly, whiles thou art in the way with him." Suffer no claim of sin or of sickness to grow upon the thought. Dismiss it with an abiding conviction that it is illegitimate, because you know that God is no more the author of sickness than He is of sin. You have no law of His to support the necessity either of sin or sickness, but you have divine authority for denying that necessity and healing the sick.

from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, page 390

Affection

The good in human affections must have ascendency over the evil and the spiritual over the animal, or happiness will never be won. The attainment of this celestial condition would improve our progeny, diminish crime, and give higher aims to ambition.

from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, page 61

It shall be the duty of every member of this Church to pray each day: “Thy kingdom come;” let the reign of divine Truth, Life, and Love be established in me, and rule out of me all sin; and may Thy Word enrich the affections of all mankind, and govern them!

"Daily Prayer" from Church Manual, by Mary Baker Eddy, Article VIII, Sect. 4

Affliction

Nahum 1 : 9
9 What do ye imagine against the Lord? he will make an utter end: affliction shall not rise up the second time.

Alcohol

God never endowed whiskey or wine or any liquor to have power to take away a man's ability to think and act rightly, nor did He give it any power to attract any more than water. Water with the same nonsensical belief that it would take away man's senses would do exactly what whiskey is supposed to do. Strip this lie naked and see that it is the belief alone that produces the so-called effects. Your brother had no more to do with that belief than you had. It was just what Jesus said of all evil, that it was the thief that stole in when the good-man of the house was not watching and then robbed the house.

It is that thief alone that robs each one, of his harmony. It is that thief that is synonymous with the lie that man's mind is man and then hands him as his mind the conglomeration of human beliefs called mortal mind and declares that that is not merely his mind but is the poor victim himself.

Rise in rebellion against the whole iniquity and as Isaiah said, 'loose the bands of wickedness and break every yoke and let the oppressed go free.' You can only do this as you really feel in your heart that the victim is never to blame but his diabolical teaching, that his mind is him, is what is to blame, when his mind is never him. He is ever himself and his mind is whatever he decides to obey, but it can never take possession of him and make him its slave for it doesn't have one word to say to him. Use your own understanding of this and set the captive free.

Excerpted from a letter by Herbert W. Eustace, C.S.B., written 1954 (Found in Metaphysical Statements, pages 107 to 108)

If a man is an inebriate, a slave to tobacco, or the special servant of any one of the myriad forms of sin, meet and destroy these errors with the truth of being, — by exhibiting to the wrong-doer the suffering which his submission to such habits brings, and by convincing him that there is no real pleasure in false appetites. A corrupt mind is manifested in a corrupt body. Lust, malice, and all sorts of evil are diseased beliefs, and you can destroy them only by destroying the wicked motives which produce them. If the evil is over in the repentant mortal mind, while its effects still remain on the individual, you can remove this disorder as God's law is fulfilled and reformation cancels the crime.

Alert

It shall be the duty of every member of this Church to defend himself daily against aggressive mental suggestion, and not be made to forget nor to neglect his duty to God, to his Leader, and to mankind. By his works he shall be judged, — and justified or condemned.

"Alertness to Duty" from Church Manual, by Mary Baker Eddy, Article VIII, Sect. 6

Almighty

Almighty. All-power; infinity; omnipotence.

from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, page 581

Ambition

Be wholly absorbed in the work of gaining daily more understanding of God. Then personal ambition, envy, desire to be in this or that place cannot use you. Personal ambition has no place in a Christian’s thought or life. He is wholly occupied in the loving, humble purpose to do good, to be good, and to prove that good is all that can govern thought, action, condition, or being.

from Collectanea, by Mary Baker Eddy, page 59

Ambush

Who is telling mankind of the foe in ambush? Is the informer one who sees the foe? If so, listen and be wise. Escape from evil, and designate those as unfaithful stewards who have seen the danger and yet have given no warning.

from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, page 571

Ancestry

In Science man is the offspring of Spirit. The beautiful, good, and pure constitute his ancestry. His origin is not, like that of mortals, in brute instinct, nor does he pass through material conditions prior to reaching intelligence. Spirit is his primitive and ultimate source of being; God is his Father, and Life is the law of his being.

from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, page 63

Angels

Angels. God's thoughts passing to man; spiritual intuitions, pure and perfect; the inspiration of goodness, purity, and immortality, counteracting all evil, sensuality, and mortality.

Animal Magnetism

The methods of Animal Magnetism, especially its secret work, should be exposed. This alone can protect the people from a future Reign of Terror, far surpassing any terrorism of the Dark Ages. One has nothing to fear from this evil if he is conscious of its presence and, on the basis of Christian Science, understands it impotence.

from Essays and Other Footprints, (the "Red Book"), by Mary Baker Eddy, page 280

Animal Magnetism, from Essays and Other Footprints, (the "Red Book"), by Mary Baker Eddy

Handling Malicious Animal Magnetism — A Collection of Articles on Overcoming Evil

Animal magnetism has no scientific foundation, for God governs all that is real, harmonious, and eternal, and His power is neither animal nor human. Its basis being a belief and this belief animal, in Science animal magnetism, mesmerism, or hypnotism is a mere negation, possessing neither intelligence, power, nor reality, and in sense it is an unreal concept of the so-called mortal mind.

from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, page 102

Animal magnetism has always been a lie about God and true prayer, but each follower of Christ will have to prove this fact.

Just as God, or the one divine Mind and intelligence, is pure Science and is therefore exact, scientific, and perfect according to fixed and absolute law in every detail or expression of Himself, so animal magnetism, or the one evil, claims to work according to law in every detail. Therefore, we must not fall into the error and subtle mistake of thinking that disease, accident, poverty, etc., just happen by chance. The remedy is always at hand, for every case, no matter what the claim of evil, there is always an exact scientific truth, or fact, that reverses the claim.

from The Dixon Letter by Caspar B. Dernvery

Animosity

Neither animosity nor mere personal attachment should impel the motives or acts of the members of The Mother Church. In Science, divine Love alone governs man; and a Christian Scientist reflects the sweet amenities of Love, in rebuking sin, in true brotherliness, charitableness, and forgiveness. The members of this Church should daily watch and pray to be delivered from all evil, from prophesying, judging, condemning, counseling, influencing or being influenced erroneously.

"A Rule for Motives and Acts" from Church Manual, by Mary Baker Eddy, Article VIII, Sect. 1

Annul

Matter cannot connect mortals with the true origin and facts of being, in which all must end. It is only by acknowledging the supremacy of Spirit, which annuls the claims of matter, that mortals can lay off mortality and find the indissoluble spiritual link which establishes man forever in the divine likeness, inseparable from his creator.

from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, page 491

Ark

Ark. Safety; the idea, or reflection, of Truth, proved to be as immortal as its Principle; the understanding of Spirit, destroying belief in matter.

God and man coexistent and eternal; Science showing that the spiritual realities of all things are created by Him and exist forever. The ark indicates temptation overcome and followed by exaltation.

from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, page 581

Asher

Asher (Jacob's son). Hope and faith; spiritual compensation; the ills of the flesh rebuked.

from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, page 581

Atmosphere

When error confronts you, withhold not the rebuke or the explanation which destroys error. Never breathe an immoral atmosphere, unless in the attempt to purify it.

from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, page 452

Spirit is symbolized by strength, presence, and power, and also by holy thoughts, winged with Love. These angels of His presence, which have the holiest charge, abound in the spiritual atmosphere of Mind, and consequently reproduce their own characteristics.

Attraction

There is but one real attraction, that of Spirit. The pointing of the needle to the pole symbolizes this all-embracing power or the attraction of God, divine Mind.

B

Babel

Babel. Self-destroying error; a kingdom divided against itself, which cannot stand; material knowledge.

The higher false knowledge builds on the basis of evidence obtained from the five corporeal senses, the more confusion ensues, and the more certain is the downfall of its structure.

from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, page 581

Baptism

Baptism. Purification by Spirit; submergence in Spirit.

We are "willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord." (II Corinthians v. 8.)

Beatitudes

3 Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
4 Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.
5 Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.
6 Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.
7 Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.
8 Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.
9 Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.
10 Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness’ sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
11 Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake.

Matthew 5 : 3-11

Beauty

Comeliness and grace are independent of matter. Being possesses its qualities before they are perceived humanly. Beauty is a thing of life, which dwells forever in the eternal Mind and reflects the charms of His goodness in expression, form, outline, and color. It is Love which paints the petal with myriad hues, glances in the warm sunbeam, arches the cloud with the bow of beauty, blazons the night with starry gems, and covers earth with loveliness.

The embellishments of the person are poor substitutes for the charms of being, shining resplendent and eternal over age and decay.

The recipe for beauty is to have less illusion and more Soul, to retreat from the belief of pain or pleasure in the body into the unchanging calm and glorious freedom of spiritual harmony.

from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, pages 247 to 248

Everything that is beautiful is said to be produced by Soul. It is, if you like, that particular ability of infinity to express itself in infinite beauty throughout creation. Everything that is beautiful that we know anything about, has its origin in Soul, divine Mind. That is the reason that in order to express beauty a person must be something besides an intellectual. There are thousands of people who cannot express anything in the nature of beauty, because they have no Soul. Oh well, they have a Soul, of course, but they have not awakened to Soul. Some people express it with great spontaneity in one way and lack it in all other ways. ...

Beauty cannot be affected by any belief, because it has its being in God. It is all the time, forever, one with its own infinitude and perfection. It cannot be afflicted or impaired in any way, because there is no other power or presence. There is no conceivable way in which it could be injured, because there is nothing to conceive of injury. Beauty, in all its glorious perfection, is conceived by God alone as the conception of God. Beauty, regardless of any material seeking, is spiritual. Like Truth, it is eternal. So don’t criticize anyone for trying to be beautiful! We’ll all be beautiful in heaven, you may be sure! ...

And let us all look as well as we can! It is quite legitimate for anyone to try to be beautiful. We can’t get into heaven without beauty! The kingdom of heaven is the kingdom of beauty.

Believing

Believing. Firmness and constancy; not a faltering nor a blind faith, but the perception of spiritual Truth. Mortal thoughts, illusion.

from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, page 582

Benjamin

Benjamin (Jacob's son). A physical belief as to life, substance, and mind; human knowledge, or so-called mortal mind, devoted to matter; pride; envy; fame; illusion; a false belief; error masquerading as the possessor of life, strength, animation, and power to act.

Renewal of affections; self-offering; an improved state of mortal mind; the introduction of a more spiritual origin; a gleam of the infinite idea of the infinite Principle; a spiritual type; that which comforts, consoles, and supports.

from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, page 582

Bless

When these things cease to bless they will cease to occur.

from Miscellany, by Mary Baker Eddy, page 143

Blood

The spiritual essence of blood is sacrifice. The efficacy of Jesus' spiritual offering is infinitely greater than can be expressed by our sense of human blood. The material blood of Jesus was no more efficacious to cleanse from sin when it was shed upon "the accursed tree," than when it was flowing in his veins as he went daily about his Father's business. His true flesh and blood were his Life; and they truly eat his flesh and drink his blood, who partake of that divine Life.

from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, page 25

Body

We must not attribute more and more intelligence to matter, but less and less, if we would be wise and healthy. The divine Mind, which forms the bud and blossom, will care for the human body, even as it clothes the lily; but let no mortal interfere with God's government by thrusting in the laws of erring, human concepts.

from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, page 62

Become conscious for a single moment that Life and intelligence are purely spiritual, — neither in nor of matter, — and the body will then utter no complaints. If suffering from a belief in sickness, you will find yourself suddenly well. Sorrow is turned into joy when the body is controlled by spiritual Life, Truth, and Love. Hence the hope of the promise Jesus bestows: "He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; ... because I go unto my Father," — [because the Ego is absent from the body, and present with Truth and Love.] The Lord's Prayer is the prayer of Soul, not of material sense.

Handling Roman Catholicism

Cause

There is but one primal cause. Therefore there can be no effect from any other cause, and there can be no reality in aught which does not proceed from this great and only cause. Sin, sickness, disease, and death belong not to the Science of being. They are the errors, which presuppose the absence of Truth, Life, or Love.

from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, page 207

Divine Mind is the only cause or Principle of existence. Cause does not exist in matter, in mortal mind, or in physical forms.

from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, page 262

... Jesus answered... To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice.

John 18 : 37

Chemicalization

Here let a word be noticed which will be better understood hereafter, — chemicalization. By chemicalization I mean the process which mortal mind and body undergo in the change of belief from a material to a spiritual basis.

from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, pages 168 to 170

What I term chemicalization is the upheaval produced when immortal Truth is destroying erroneous mortal belief. Mental chemicalization brings sin and sickness to the surface, forcing impurities to pass away, as is the case with a fermenting fluid.

from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, page 401

This destruction is a moral chemicalization, wherein old things pass away and all things become new. The worldly or material tendencies of human affections and pursuits are thus annihilated; and this is the advent of spiritualization. Heaven comes down to earth, and mortals learn at last the lesson, “I have no enemies.”

from Miscellaneous Writings, by Mary Baker Eddy, page 10

Mortal error will vanish in a moral chemicalization. This mental fermentation has begun, and will continue until all errors of belief yield to understanding. Belief is changeable, but spiritual understanding is changeless.

from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, page 96

Chemicalization and Tribulation by Paul R. Smillie

Children

Children. The spiritual thoughts and representatives of Life, Truth, and Love.

Sensual and mortal beliefs; counterfeits of creation, whose better originals are God's thoughts, not in embryo, but in maturity; material suppositions of life, substance, and intelligence, opposed to the Science of being.

from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, page 582

When speaking of God's children, not the children of men, Jesus said, "The kingdom of God is within you;" that is, Truth and Love reign in the real man, showing that man in God's image is unfallen and eternal.

from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, page 476

The entire education of children should be such as to form habits of obedience to the moral and spiritual law, with which the child can meet and master the belief in so-called physical laws, a belief which breeds disease.

Children should be allowed to remain children in knowledge, and should become men and women only through growth in the understanding of man's higher nature.

from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, page 62

Children of Israel

Children of Israel. The representatives of Soul, not corporeal sense; the offspring of Spirit, who, having wrestled with error, sin, and sense, are governed by divine Science; some of the ideas of God beheld as men, casting out error and healing the sick; Christ's offspring.

from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, page 583

Christ

Christ. The divine manifestation of God, which comes to the flesh to destroy incarnate error.

from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, page 583

For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive.

I Corinthians 15 : 22

Christian Science

The term Christian Science was introduced by the author to designate the scientific system of divine healing.

The revelation consists of two parts:

1. The discovery of this divine Science of Mind-healing, through a spiritual sense of the Scriptures and through the teachings of the Comforter, as promised by the Master.

2. The proof, by present demonstration, that the so-called miracles of Jesus did not specially belong to a dispensation now ended, but that they illustrated an ever-operative divine Principle. The operation of this Principle indicates the eternality of the scientific order and continuity of being.

from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, page 582

The secret of Christian Science in right thinking and acting is open to mankind, but few, comparatively, see it; or, seeing it, shut their eyes and wait for a more convenient season; or as of old cry out: “Why art thou come hither to torment me before the time?”

from Message for 1900, by Mary Baker Eddy, page 9

Whosoever attempts to ostracize Christian Science will signally fail; for no one can fight against God, and win.

from Message for 1900, by Mary Baker Eddy, page 9

Church

Church. The structure of Truth and Love; whatever rests upon and proceeds from divine Principle. The Church is that institution, which affords proof of its utility and is found elevating the race, rousing the dormant understanding from material beliefs to the apprehension of spiritual ideas and the demonstration of divine Science, thereby casting out devils, or error, and healing the sick.

from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, page 583

Conscience

It were better to be exposed to every plague on earth than to endure the cumulative effects of a guilty conscience. The abiding consciousness of wrongdoing tends to destroy the ability to do right.

from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, page 402

Correction

I remember that on one occasion when a student in Mrs. Eddy’s house was corrected because of an unscientific statement she made, Mrs. Eddy called her severely to account for her work in the presence of a number of others who were at that time under Mrs. Eddy’s instruction. The student began to cry, and said, “I don’t like you to talk to me like that; I want you to love me.” Mrs. Eddy replied, “I do love you and that is the reason why I am talking to you in this way. If I did not love you, I would not take the time to correct you. It is because I want to have you be right and do right that I am correcting you,” — and with that she dismissed her.

Corrupt

53 For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality.
54 So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory.

I Corinthians 15 : 53, 54

7 Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.
8 For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting.
9 And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.

Galatians 6 : 7-9

Covenant

My covenant will I not break, nor alter the thing that is gone out of my lips.

Psalm 89 : 34

Creator

Creator. Spirit; Mind; intelligence; the animating divine Principle of all that is real and good; self-existent Life, Truth, and Love; that which is perfect and eternal; the opposite of matter and evil, which have no Principle; God, who made all that was made and could not create an atom or an element the opposite of Himself.

Daily Duties

Daily Prayer

It shall be the duty of every member of this Church to pray each day: "Thy kingdom come;" let the reign of divine Truth, Life, and Love be established in me, and rule out of me all sin; and may Thy Word enrich the affections of all mankind, and govern them!

Church Manual, Article VIII, Sect. 4

A Rule for Motives and Acts

Neither animosity nor mere personal attachment should impel the motives or acts of the members of The Mother Church. In Science, divine Love alone governs man; and a Christian Scientist reflects the sweet amenities of Love, in rebuking sin, in true brotherliness, charitableness, and forgiveness. The members of this Church should daily watch and pray to be delivered from all evil, from prophesying, judging, condemning, counseling, influencing or being influenced erroneously.

Church Manual, Article VIII, Sect. 1

Alertness to Duty

It shall be the duty of every member of this Church to defend himself daily against aggressive mental suggestion, and not be made to forget nor to neglect his duty to God, to his Leader, and to mankind. By his works he shall be judged, — and justified or condemned.

Dan (Jacob's son). Animal magnetism; so-called mortal mind controlling mortal mind; error, working out the designs of error; one belief preying upon another.

from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, page 583

Day

Day. The irradiance of Life; light, the spiritual idea of Truth and Love.

"And the evening and the morning were the first day." (Genesis i. 5.) The objects of time and sense disappear in the illumination of spiritual understanding, and Mind measures time according to the good that is unfolded. This unfolding is God's day, and "there shall be no night there."

Day, from Collected Writings by Bicknell Young

Death

Death. An illusion, the lie of life in matter; the unreal and untrue; the opposite of Life.

Matter has no life, hence it has no real existence. Mind is immortal. The flesh, warring against Spirit; that which frets itself free from one belief only to be fettered by another, until every belief of life where Life is not yields to eternal Life. Any material evidence of death is false, for it contradicts the spiritual facts of being.

from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, page 584

Demonstration

In Science we can use only what we understand. We must prove our faith by demonstration.

from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, page 329

Give all your attention to what you are doing, for it is a divine requirement that you do well what you have to do. When one is doing what he has to do and doing it properly, that is demonstration. He is demonstrating Principle.

from The 1936 Primary Class, by Bicknell Young, page 100

Many times when a thought seems to come from God, it may come from the human mind. When one places himself in position of listening for God’s voice, he opens himself to the possibility of being influenced by the thoughts of others. Hence one must watch, and learn to differentiate between the human suggestion and the divine impartation. Mrs. Eddy indicates that if she took time enough to demonstrate, she could not be misled by suggestion. The reason for this is that demonstration continued long enough, will surely silence the voice of suggestion, and leave God’s voice alone holding the field. When Elijah had his contest with the priests of Baal, his demonstration proved to be on a higher plane than that of Moses, because the latter did not prevent the magicians of Egypt from giving exhibitions of their powers to match his, up to a certain point. Elijah, however, not only caused fire to come down from heaven, but prevented the priests from bringing forth phenomena of any sort. Mrs. Eddy never regarded the demonstration of hearing God’s voice completed, until it had silenced any suggestions claiming to come from mortal mind. The very fact that she admits that at times she mistook mortal mind’s suggestions for the voice of God, should encourage her followers, and at the same time cause them to make a more careful and prolonged demonstration to be sure it is Mind’s voice, in accordance with her instruction in Miscellaneous Writings, 117:4.

Years ago, when a photographer’s proof of a picture was exposed to the sunlight, it began to fade at once, whereas the finished picture did not. When Mrs. Eddy heard what she thought was God’s direction, she exposed it to the light of demonstration. Only if it stayed fast, did she know for sure that it was God’s direction.

Denial

"Whosoever shall deny me before men, him will I also deny before my Father which is in heaven." In Christian Science, a denial of Truth is fatal, while a just acknowledgment of Truth and of what it has done for us is an effectual help. If pride, superstition, or any error prevents the honest recognition of benefits received, this will be a hindrance to the recovery of the sick and the success of the student.

Denounce

Animal magnetism, I acknowledge your claims, but I denounce your power.

from Collectanea, by Mary Baker Eddy, page 151

Devil

Devil. Evil; a lie; error; neither corporeality nor mind; the opposite of Truth; a belief in sin, sickness, and death; animal magnetism or hypnotism; the lust of the flesh, which saith: "I am life and intelligence in matter. There is more than one mind, for I am mind, — a wicked mind, self-made or created by a tribal god and put into the opposite of mind, termed matter, thence to reproduce a mortal universe, including man, not after the image and likeness of Spirit, but after its own image."

from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, page 584

Dishonor

There is no power apart from God. Omnipotence has all-power, and to acknowledge any other power is to dishonor God.

from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, page 228

Divine Mind

Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:

Philippians 2 : 5

Question. — What is Mind?

Answer. — Mind is God. The exterminator of error is the great truth that God, good, is the only Mind, and that the supposititious opposite of infinite Mind — called devil or evil — is not Mind, is not Truth, but error, without intelligence or reality.

from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, page 469

Dominion

Truth has no beginning. The divine Mind is the Soul of man, and gives man dominion over all things. Man was not created from a material basis, nor bidden to obey material laws which Spirit never made; his province is in spiritual statutes, in the higher law of Mind.

from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, page 307

Think less of the enactments of mortal mind, and you will sooner grasp man's God-given dominion. You must understand your way out of human theories relating to health, or you will never believe that you are quite free from some ailment. The harmony and immortality of man will never be reached without the understanding that Mind is not in matter. Let us banish sickness as an outlaw, and abide by the rule of perpetual harmony, — God's law. It is man's moral right to annul an unjust sentence, a sentence never inflicted by divine authority.

from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, page 381

Entirely separate from the belief and dream of material living, is the Life divine, revealing spiritual understanding and the consciousness of man's dominion over the whole earth. This understanding casts out error and heals the sick, and with it you can speak "as one having authority."

from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, page 14

The enslavement of man is not legitimate. It will cease when man enters into his heritage of freedom, his God-given dominion over the material senses. Mortals will some day assert their freedom in the name of Almighty God. Then they will control their own bodies through the understanding of divine Science. Dropping their present beliefs, they will recognize harmony as the spiritual reality and discord as the material unreality.

If we follow the command of our Master, "Take no thought for your life," we shall never depend on bodily conditions, structure, or economy, but we shall be masters of the body, dictate its terms, and form and control it with Truth.

from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, page 228

The planets have no more power over man than over his Maker, since God governs the universe; but man, reflecting God's power, has dominion over all the earth and its hosts.

from Divinity Course and General Collectanea, (the "Blue Book"), by Mary Baker Eddy, page 218

When will Jesus' professed followers learn to emulate him in all his ways and to imitate his mighty works? Those who procured the martyrdom of that righteous man would gladly have turned his sacred career into a mutilated doctrinal platform. May the Christians of to-day take up the more practical import of that career! It is possible, — yea, it is the duty and privilege of every child, man, and woman, — to follow in some degree the example of the Master by the demonstration of Truth and Life, of health and holiness. Christians claim to be his followers, but do they follow him in the way that he commanded? Hear these imperative commands: "Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect!" "Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature!" "Heal the sick!"

Ears

Ears. Not organs of the so-called corporeal senses, but spiritual understanding.

from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, page 585

Earth

Earth. A sphere; a type of eternity and immortality, which are likewise without beginning or end.

To material sense, earth is matter; to spiritual sense, it is a compound idea.

from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, page 585

Ego

I, or Ego. Divine Principle; Spirit; Soul; incorporeal, unerring, immortal, and eternal Mind.

There is but one I, or Us, but one divine Principle, or Mind, governing all existence; man and woman unchanged forever in their individual characters, even as numbers which never blend with each other, though they are governed by one Principle. All the objects of God's creation reflect one Mind, and whatever reflects not this one Mind, is false and erroneous, even the belief that life, substance, and intelligence are both mental and material.

Electricity

Electricity by Bicknell Young

Electricity functions by a discharge from the positive to the negative pole. From this phenomenon we learn the nature of animal magnetism in its claim to be contagious, and to dart from one mortal thought to another. Hence our defense must lie in acknowledging this claim, and then refuting it with the truth of being.

Once Mrs. Eddy asked a student the question: “Do you understand the handling of electrical poisoning? It is mental thought transference with malice behind it — with an intent to harm. Mortal mind sends its messages without wires. It is aggressive mental suggestion maliciously directed.”

from Watches, Prayers, and Arguments, given by Mary Baker Eddy, page 17

Elias

Elias. Prophecy; spiritual evidence opposed to material sense; Christian Science, with which can be discerned the spiritual fact of whatever the material senses behold; the basis of immortality.

"Elias truly shall first come and restore all things." (Matthew xvii. 11.)

Email, text messages, and phone calls

Unquestionably, we all need to dwell in the secret place of the Most High constantly, or rather, to be that secret place. Otherwise [email, text messages,] telegrams, letters or telephone calls may take us by surprise and for the moment, we may believe the error to be real.

from Association Addresses by Bicknell Young, pages 29 to 30 of the 1934 Address

When the telephone rings, don’t be found napping. Be prepared. The “full armor of God” is unlike the ancient warrior’s armor, for it does not interfere with our activity. It is to have the constant realization that God, Spirit, is All, and to have nothing else going on. Then you are less perturbed by the unexpected events of the day, and more ready to take care of things as they come up.

from the 1936 Primary Class by Bicknell Young, page 100

Watch your phone conversations, but don’t be afraid.

from 1937 College by Bicknell Young, page 141

Emerge

Emerge gently from matter into Spirit. Think not to thwart the spiritual ultimate of all things, but come naturally into Spirit through better health and morals and as the result of spiritual growth. Not death, but the understanding of Life, makes man immortal.

from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, page 485

Envy

Man's enslavement to the most relentless masters — passion, selfishness, envy, hatred, and revenge — is conquered only by a mighty struggle. Every hour of delay makes the struggle more severe. If man is not victorious over the passions, they crush out happiness, health, and manhood. Here Christian Science is the sovereign panacea, giving strength to the weakness of mortal mind, — strength from the immortal and omnipotent Mind, — and lifting humanity above itself into purer desires, even into spiritual power and good-will to man.

Let the slave of wrong desire learn the lessons of Christian Science, and he will get the better of that desire, and ascend a degree in the scale of health, happiness, and existence.

from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, page 407

A moral question may hinder the recovery of the sick. Lurking error, lust, envy, revenge, malice, or hate will perpetuate or even create the belief in disease. Errors of all sorts tend in this direction. Your true course is to destroy the foe, and leave the field to God, Life, Truth, and Love, remembering that God and His ideas alone are real and harmonious.

from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, page 419

Error

Error. See chapter on Recapitulation, page 472. (link)

from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, page 585

Let error kill itself. It comes to you for life and you give it the only life it has — in belief.

from Divinity Course and General Collectanea, (the "Blue Book"), by Mary Baker Eddy, page 215

WATCH — No form of error can make a C.S. treatment produce an opposite effect, nor can I be made to overlook or forget anything in the treatment that is necessary for its certain accomplishment of good. We must go ahead of error, and keep ahead of error all the way. Error is nothing but erroneous thought, and we must never give in to it, or go down before it. Mental activity must be tranquil — not lazy; it must express force, be exact, and it must know the reality of man’s oneness with God, and the utter unreality of evil in all its forms of beliefs.

from Divinity Course and General Collectanea, (the "Blue Book"), by Mary Baker Eddy, page 41

Error never arrives at its destination, no matter how auspiciously it may seem to have started.

God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.

I John 5 : 11

Euphrates

Euphrates (river). Divine Science encompassing the universe and man; the true idea of God; a type of the glory which is to come; metaphysics taking the place of physics; the reign of righteousness. The atmosphere of human belief before it accepts sin, sickness, or death; a state of mortal thought, the only error of which is limitation; finity; the opposite of infinity.

from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, page 585

Eve

Eve. A beginning; mortality; that which does not last forever; a finite belief concerning life, substance, and intelligence in matter; error; the belief that the human race originated materially instead of spiritually, that man started first from dust, second from a rib, and third from an egg.

Evening

Evening. Mistiness of mortal thought; weariness of mortal mind; obscured views; peace and rest.

from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, page 586

Evil

Mankind must learn that evil is not power. Its so-called despotism is but a phase of nothingness. Christian Science despoils the kingdom of evil, and pre-eminently promotes affection and virtue in families and therefore in the community. The Apostle Paul refers to the personification of evil as "the god of this world," and further defines it as dishonesty and craftiness. Sin was the Assyrian moon-god.

from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, page 102

There is no protection and no virtue in ignorance of evil and its phases. Each step of spiritual revelation is met by a phase of animal magnetism. In other words, evil claims to reveal in exact counterfeit its phases to contradict the revelations of Truth as all. It claims to be just as true as Truth. These claims must be met and mastered by Truth, just as Moses, by the more spiritual understanding of power, caused his mental concept of serpent to swallow up the serpents of the magicians and wonder-workers of the Egyptians.

Mrs. Eddy saw fit to include in Science and Health, a book in which is revealed spiritual truth, a chapter called, “Animal Magnetism Unmasked,” and saw the necessity of unmasking the claim and operation of evil as it tried to affect and destroy her revelation of Truth. It was her necessity as well as her duty to do this. It is also the necessity and duty of every student of Christian Science to understand and handle the claims of animal magnetism as revealed not only in this chapter, but throughout the entire textbook.

Food

Give us this day our daily bread.

Matthew 6 : 11

Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment?

Matthew 6 : 25

The primitive custom of taking no thought about food left the stomach and bowels free to act in obedience to nature, and gave the gospel a chance to be seen in its glorious effects upon the body.

from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, page 176

Admit the common hypothesis that food is the nutriment of life, and there follows the necessity for another admission in the opposite direction, — that food has power to destroy Life, God, through a deficiency or an excess, a quality or a quantity. This is a specimen of the ambiguous nature of all material health-theories. They are self-contradictory and self-destructive, constituting a "kingdom divided against itself," which is "brought to desolation." If food was prepared by Jesus for his disciples, it cannot destroy life.

from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, page 388

Mind regulates the condition of the stomach, bowels, and food, the temperature of children and of men, and matter does not.

from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, page 413

When Christ changes a belief of sin or of sickness into a better belief, then belief melts into spiritual understanding, and sin, disease, and death disappear. Christ, Truth, gives mortals temporary food and clothing until the material, transformed with the ideal, disappears, and man is clothed and fed spiritually. St. Paul says, "Work out your own salvation with fear and trembling:" Jesus said, "Fear not, little flock; for it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom." This truth is Christian Science.

from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, page 442

I do not maintain that anyone can exist in the flesh without food and raiment; but I do believe that the real man is immortal and that he lives in Spirit, not matter. Christian Science must be accepted at this period by induction. We admit the whole, because a part is proved and that part illustrates and proves the entire Principle. Christian Science can be taught only by those who are morally advanced and spiritually endowed, for it is not superficial, nor is it discerned from the standpoint of the human senses. Only by the illumination of the spiritual sense, can the light of understanding be thrown upon this Science, because Science reverses the evidence before the material senses and furnishes the eternal interpretation of God and man.

from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, page 461

In divine Science, man is sustained by God, the divine Principle of being. The earth, at God's command, brings forth food for man's use. Knowing this, Jesus once said, "Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink," — presuming not on the prerogative of his creator, but recognizing God, the Father and Mother of all, as able to feed and clothe man as He doth the lilies.

from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, page 530

God is more to a man than his belief, and the less we acknowledge matter or its laws, the more immortality we possess. Consciousness constructs a better body when faith in matter has been conquered. Correct material belief by spiritual understanding, and Spirit will form you anew. You will never fear again except to offend God, and you will never believe that heart or any portion of the body can destroy you.

from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, page 425

Food as spiritual nutriment designed to support man, cannot be separated from God's love and care; … Neither does it sustain man of itself; it must be considered to be the expression of God's love.

Digestion is harmonious action. Assimilation is unity of ideas. Nutrition is life.

from Divinity Course and General Collectanea, (the Blue Book), by Mary Baker Eddy, page 269

Bread of Heaven: that which nourishes, and sustains.

from Divinity Course and General Collectanea, (the Blue Book), by Mary Baker Eddy, page 196

When Mrs. Eddy found students trying to put food aside, instead of a material sense of food, she said, "Don’t say there is no intelligence in food. The earth brings forth food for man’s use and we must reflect the divine intelligence that enables us to use that food; adhere to the statement that divine intelligence directs man, and governed by it, man eats, sleeps, walks and talks harmoniously. Depict the real Christ; the man-made is not the image.

The world of mortal belief malpractices on food just as it does on nerves. This malpractice is the talking serpent that must be handled. Jesus encouraged the eating of food, showing that at our present stage of experience, it is not food that we must eliminate, but the belief that it is material, that it can affect man adversely either through quality or quantity, or that it can be the medium for mortal mind. If God is not absent from the blessings He bestows, then we must never consider that His goodness and love are absent from the food He supplies to His children.

When Jesus met with his disciples at supper, the eating of food became a channel for a spiritual uplift. When food is seen as a channel for inspiration and blessing, man’s spiritual nature is fed, at the same time his temporary material needs are taken care of.

Forgive

Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do.

Luke 23:34

Formula

Our Leader forbids the use of formulas. When one uses a formula in his healing work, it means that he has more faith in the letter than in the Spirit. Part of our training and growth is to learn how to formulate through divine guidance, our own scientific tools, or statements, to fit each problem and then to put back of these declarations the expectancy and inspiration that makes them efficacious.

Those who use formulas not only lose the growth that comes of building their own tools, but they erroneously believe that it is the statements which they use that do the healing. In this way they neglect and overlook the need of the Spirit. A correct understanding of Christian Science rules out faith or belief in the efficacy of the letter without the Spirit. Such were vain repetition, such as the heathen use.

You might as well try to put God in your pocket as to put Science and Health into a formula.

Friendship

There are no greater miracles known to earth than perfection and an unbroken friendship. We love our friends, but ofttimes we lose them in proportion to our affection. The sacrifices made for others are not infrequently met by envy, ingratitude, and enmity, which smite the heart and threaten to paralyze its beneficence. The unavailing tear is shed both for the living and the dead.

Nothing except sin, in the students themselves, can separate them from me. Therefore we should guard thought and action, keeping them in accord with Christ, and our friendship will surely continue.

Heaven is not a locality, but a divine state of Mind in which all the manifestations of Mind are harmonious and immortal, because sin is not there and man is found having no righteousness of his own, but in possession of “the mind of the Lord,” as the Scripture says.

from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, page 291

Hell

Hell. Mortal belief; error; lust; remorse; hatred; revenge; sin; sickness; death; suffering and self-destruction, self-imposed agony; effects of sin; that which "worketh abomination or maketh a lie."

from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, page 588

Heredity

Heredity is not a law. The remote cause or belief of disease is not dangerous because of its priority and the connection of past mortal thoughts with present. The predisposing cause and the exciting cause are mental.

from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, page 178

In proportion to our understanding of Christian Science, we are freed from the belief of heredity, of mind in matter or animal magnetism; and we disarm sin of its imaginary power in proportion to our spiritual understanding of the status of immortal being.

Immortal man demonstrates the government of God, good, in which is no power to sin.

from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, page 405

Science reveals the glorious possibilities of immortal man, forever unlimited by the mortal senses.

In

In. A term obsolete in Science if used with reference to Spirit, or Deity.

from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, page 588

Inspiration

The divine Science of man is woven into one web of consistency without seam or rent. Mere speculation or superstition appropriates no part of the divine vesture, while inspiration restores every part of the Christly garment of righteousness.

from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, page 342

Inspiration is not a mechanical process of repeating mere words by rote, of rounding them up in just so many sentences and no more. It is not a lifeless force which can be caught and imprisoned in a word or a volume — as a taxidermist would stuff birds, always to present the same stiff, glassy appearance. It is, rather, the kaleidoscopic presentation of the beauty and wondrous power — not of some new truth heretofore unheard of — but of an eternally existing, spiritual Fact unfolding and forever re-unfolding itself to ‘eyes that see.’

from Divinity Course and General Collectanea, (the "Blue Book"), by Mary Baker Eddy, page 153

Be vigilant. Be wise. Store your mind with deep treasures. Learn to talk just the inspiration of Truth. Spiritualize your whole being – let this be the outcome of your growth.

from Divinity Course and General Collectanea, (the "Blue Book"), by Mary Baker Eddy, page 227

O Love! Give me higher, holier, purer, self-abnegated motives and desires, and spiritual inspiration.

from Divinity Course and General Collectanea, (the "Blue Book"), by Mary Baker Eddy, page 30

Instrument

I wish as an act of justice that you hold sacredly in your memory that I assume no good or power of myself, that to God alone I ascribe all love, wisdom and power, the All-in-all, the all good; that I am absolutely nothing, a mere instrument in God's hands to be used as He will. What has this hillside priest, this seaside teacher, done for the human race? Ask, rather, what has he not done. His holy humility, unworldliness, and self-abandonment wrought infinite results. Law

God’s law is in three words, “I am All;” and this perfect law is ever present to rebuke any claim of another law. … It is Truth’s knowledge of its own infinitude which forbids the genuine existence of even a claim to error. This knowledge is light wherein there is no darkness, — not light holding darkness within itself. The consciousness of light is like the eternal law of God, revealing Him and nothing else.

Letter

5 Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think any thing as of ourselves; but our sufficiency is of God;
6 Who also hath made us able ministers of the new testament; not of the letter, but of the spirit: for the letter killeth, but the spirit giveth life.

II Corinthians 3 : 5, 6

The letter of Science plentifully reaches humanity to-day, but its spirit comes only in small degrees. The vital part, the heart and soul of Christian Science, is Love. Without this, the letter is but the dead body of Science, — pulseless, cold, inanimate.

Lord God

Lord God. Jehovah. This double term is not used in the first chapter of Genesis, the record of spiritual creation. It is introduced in the second and following chapters, when the spiritual sense of God and of infinity is disappearing from the recorder's thought, — when the true scientific statements of the Scriptures become clouded through a physical sense of God as finite and corporeal. From this follow idolatry and mythology, — belief in many gods, or material intelligences, as the opposite of the one Spirit, or intelligence, named Elohim, or God.

Lord

Lord. In the Hebrew, this term is sometimes employed as a title, which has the inferior sense of master, or ruler. In the Greek, the word kurios almost always has this lower sense, unless specially coupled with the name God. Its higher signification is Supreme Ruler.

The Lord's Prayer with spiritual interpretation

Our Father which art in heaven,
Our Father-Mother God, all-harmonious,

Hallowed be Thy name.
Adorable One.

Thy kingdom come.
Thy kingdom is come; Thou art ever-present.

Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.
Enable us to know, — as in heaven, so on earth, — God is omnipotent, supreme.

Give us this day our daily bread;
Give us grace for to-day; feed the famished affections;

And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.
And Love is reflected in love;

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil;
And God leadeth us not into temptation, but delivereth us from sin, disease, and death.

For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever.
For God is infinite, all-power, all Life, Truth, Love, over all, and All.

Man is the family name for all ideas, — the sons and daughters of God.

from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, page 515

Man has no underived power. That selfhood is false which opposes itself to God, claims another father, and denies spiritual sonship; but as many as receive the knowledge of God in Science must reflect, in some degree, the power of Him who gave and giveth man dominion over all the earth.

From “Is There No Death?” in Unity of Good by Mary Baker Eddy, page 37

Man is incapable of sin, sickness, and death. The real man cannot depart from holiness,

from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, page 475

Keep distinctly in thought that man is the offspring of God, not of man; that man is spiritual, not material; that Soul is Spirit, outside of matter, never in it, never giving the body life and sensation. It breaks the dream of disease to understand that sickness is formed by the human mind, not by matter nor by the divine Mind.

from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, page 396

In divine Science, man is the true image of God. The divine nature was best expressed in Christ Jesus, who threw upon mortals the truer reflection of God and lifted their lives higher than their poor thought-models would allow, — thoughts which presented man as fallen, sick, sinning, and dying. The Christlike understanding of scientific being and divine healing includes a perfect Principle and idea, — perfect God and perfect man, — as the basis of thought and demonstration.

from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, page 259

The great truth in the Science of being, that the real man was, is, and ever shall be perfect, is incontrovertible; for if man is the image, reflection, of God, he is neither inverted nor subverted, but upright and Godlike.

As Mary Baker Eddy I am the weakest of mortals. As the Discoverer of Christian Science I am the bone and sinew of the world.

from Recollections of Mary Baker Eddy by James F. Gilman

In following these leadings of scientific revelation, the Bible was my only textbook. The Scriptures were illumined; reason and revelation were reconciled, and afterwards the truth of Christian Science was demonstrated. from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, page 110

The discovery and founding of Christian Science has cost more than thirty years of unremitting toil and unrest; but, comparing those with the joy of knowing that the sinner and the sick are helped thereby, that time and eternity bear witness to this gift of God to the race, I am the debtor.

Matter

Matter. Mythology; mortality; another name for mortal mind; illusion; intelligence, substance, and life in non-intelligence and mortality; life resulting in death, and death in life; sensation in the sensationless; mind originating in matter; the opposite of Truth; the opposite of Spirit; the opposite of God; that of which immortal Mind takes no cognizance; that which mortal mind sees, feels, hears, tastes, and smells only in belief.

from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, page 591

If you will admit, with me, that matter is neither Substance, Intelligence, nor Life, you may have all that is left of it; and you will have touched the hem of the garment of Jesus’ idea of Spirit.

Meek

Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.

Matthew 5 : 5

But the meek shall inherit the earth; and shall delight themselves in the abundance of peace.

Psalm 37 : 11

...the original meaning of the word is “liquid.” Thus the ability of all liquids to conform naturally and perfectly to the form they are poured into. The clay in the potter’s hands takes the form he moulds it into.

from Meekness and Restoration by Florence Roberts

Methodical

Mrs. Eddy was always a 'minute woman.' She said that Christian Scientists, having Principle as their measuring rods, should be the most methodical people in the world in the ordering of their personal lives, their homes, and their business affairs.

from Twelve Years with Mary Baker Eddy, by Irving Tomlinson, page 165

Experience has taught me that the rules of Christian Science can be far more thoroughly and readily acquired by regularly settled and systematic workers, than by unsettled and spasmodic efforts. Genuine Christian Scientists are, or should be, the most systematic and law-abiding people on earth, because their religion demands implicit adherence to fixed rules, in the orderly demonstration thereof. Let some of these rules be here stated.

First: Christian Scientists are to “heal the sick” as the Master commanded.

In so doing they must follow the divine order as prescribed by Jesus, — never, in any way, to trespass upon the rights of their neighbors, but to obey the celestial injunction, “Whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them.”

In this orderly, scientific dispensation healers become a law unto themselves. They feel their own burdens less, and can therefore bear the weight of others’ burdens, since it is only through the lens of their unselfishness that the sunshine of Truth beams with such efficacy as to dissolve error.

It is already understood that Christian Scientists will not receive a patient who is under the care of a regular physician, until he has done with the case and different aid is sought. The same courtesy should be observed in the professional intercourse of Christian Science healers with one another.“

Second: Another command of the Christ, his prime command, was that his followers should “raise the dead.” He lifted his own body from the sepulchre. In him, Truth called the physical man from the tomb to health, and the so-called dead forthwith emerged into a higher manifestation of Life.

The spiritual significance of this command, “Raise the dead,” most concerns mankind. It implies such an elevation of the understanding as will enable thought to apprehend the living beauty of Love, its practicality, its divine energies, its health-giving and life-bestowing qualities, — yea, its power to demonstrate immortality. This end Jesus achieved, both by example and precept.

Third: This leads inevitably to a consideration of another part of Christian Science work, — a part which concerns us intimately, — preaching the gospel.

This evangelistic duty should not be so warped as to signify that we must or may go, uninvited, to work in other vineyards than our own. One would, or should, blush to enter unasked another’s pulpit, and preach without the consent of the stated occupant of that pulpit. The Lord’s command means this, that we should adopt the spirit of the Saviour’s ministry, and abide in such a spiritual attitude as will draw men unto us. Itinerancy should not be allowed to clip the wings of divine Science. Mind demonstrates omnipresence and omnipotence, but Mind revolves on a spiritual axis, and its power is displayed and its presence felt in eternal stillness and immovable Love. The divine potency of this spiritual mode of Mind, and the hindrance opposed to it by material motion, is proven beyond a doubt in the practice of Mind-healing.

from Retrospection and Introspection, by Mary Baker Eddy, pages 87 to 89

Let all things be done decently and in order.

I Corinthians 14 : 40

Mrs. Eddy believed that if one’s thought was not orderly and exact in the things that make up present consciousness, that same thought would not be exact to give a treatment or use an exact science.

from Addresses, by Martha Wilcox, page 14

Mind

Mind. The only I, or Us; the only Spirit, Soul, divine Principle, substance, Life, Truth, Love; the one God; not that which is in man, but the divine Principle, or God, of whom man is the full and perfect expression; Deity, which outlines but is not outlined.

from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, page 591

And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

Romans 12 : 2

For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.

II Timothy 1 : 7

The manifestation of God through mortals is as light passing through the window-pane. The light and the glass never mingle, but as matter, the glass is less opaque than the walls. The mortal mind through which Truth appears most vividly is that one which has lost much materiality — much error — in order to become a better transparency for Truth. Moral idiocy

As named in Christian Science, animal magnetism or hypnotism is the specific term for error, or mortal mind. It is the false belief that mind is in matter, and is both evil and good; that evil is as real as good and more powerful. This belief has not one quality of Truth. It is either ignorant or malicious. The malicious form of hypnotism ultimates in moral idiocy.

Morning

Morning. Light; symbol of Truth; revelation and progress.

from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, page 591

Mortal

A mortal sinner is not God's man. Mortals are the counterfeits of immortals. They are the children of the wicked one, or the one evil, which declares that man begins in dust or as a material embryo. In divine Science, God and the real man are inseparable as divine Principle and idea.

from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, pages 475 to 476

The conceptions of mortal, erring thought must give way to the ideal of all that is perfect and eternal. Through many generations human beliefs will be attaining diviner conceptions, and the immortal and perfect model of God's creation will finally be seen as the only true conception of being.

from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, page 260

Mortals are not like immortals, created in God's own image; but infinite Spirit being all, mortal consciousness will at last yield to the scientific fact and disappear, and the real sense of being, perfect and forever intact, will appear.

The manifestation of God through mortals is as light passing through the window-pane. The light and the glass never mingle, but as matter, the glass is less opaque than the walls. The mortal mind through which Truth appears most vividly is that one which has lost much materiality — much error — in order to become a better transparency for Truth. Then, like a cloud melting into thin vapor, it no longer hides the sun.

Mortal man must be shaken out of his complacence. Otherwise he will never make an effort sufficient to throw off mortality, or to accomplish anything constructive along spiritual lines.

Mortal mind

Mortal Mind. Nothing claiming to be something, for Mind is immortal; mythology; error creating other errors; a suppositional material sense, alias the belief that sensation is in matter, which is sensationless; a belief that life, substance, and intelligence are in and of matter; the opposite of Spirit, and therefore the opposite of God, or good; the belief that life has a beginning and therefore an end; the belief that man is the offspring of mortals; the belief that there can be more than one creator; idolatry; the subjective states of error; material senses; that which neither exists in Science nor can be recognized by the spiritual sense; sin; sickness; death.

We own no past, no future, we possess only now. If the reliable now is carelessly lost in speaking or in acting, it comes not back again. Obedience

Obeying the divine Principle which you profess to understand and love, demonstrates Truth. Never absent from your post, never off guard, never ill-humored, never unready to work for God, — is obedience; being “faithful over a few things.” If in one instance obedience be lacking, you lose the scientific rule and its reward: namely, to be made “ruler over many things.”

from Miscellaneous Writings, by Mary Baker Eddy, pages 116 to 117 (link to whole article)

God creates and governs the universe, including man. The universe is filled with spiritual ideas, which He evolves, and they are obedient to the Mind that makes them.

from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, page 295

Overcoming by Obedience, from Addresses by Martha Wilcox

Learn to obey; but learn first what obedience is. When God speaks to you through one of His little ones, and you obey the mandate but retain a desire to follow your own inclinations, that is not obedience. I sometimes advise students not to do certain things which I know it were best not to do, and they comply with my counsel; but, watching them, I discern that this obedience is contrary to their inclination. Then I sometimes withdraw that advice and say: “You may do it if you desire.” But I say this not because it is the best thing to do, but because the student is not willing — therefore, not ready — to obey.

The universe of Spirit is peopled with spiritual beings, and its government is divine Science. Man is the offspring, not of the lowest, but of the highest qualities of Mind. Man understands spiritual existence in proportion as his treasures of Truth and Love are enlarged.

Man is not the offspring of flesh, but of Spirit, — of Life, not of matter. Because Life is God, Life must be eternal, self-existent. Life is the everlasting I am, the Being who was and is and shall be, whom nothing can erase.

Pardon

Divine Love corrects and governs man. Men may pardon, but this divine Principle alone reforms the sinner. God is not separate from the wisdom He bestows. The talents He gives we must improve. Calling on Him to forgive our work badly done or left undone, implies the vain supposition that we have nothing to do but to ask pardon, and that afterwards we shall be free to repeat the offence.

from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, page 5

Mere legal pardon (and there is no other, for divine Principle never pardons our sins or mistakes till they are corrected) leaves the offender free to repeat the offence, if indeed, he has not already suffered sufficiently from vice to make him turn from it with loathing. Truth bestows no pardon upon error, but wipes it out in the most effectual manner. Jesus suffered for our sins, not to annul the divine sentence for an individual's sin, but because sin brings inevitable suffering.

from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, page 11

Past

That which hath been is now; and that which is to be hath already been; and God requireth that which is past.

Ecclesiastes 3 : 15, in the King James Bible

We must detach thought from the dead past and use the opportunity of the present hour.

Patience

What we most need is the prayer of fervent desire for growth in grace, expressed in patience, meekness, love, and good deeds.

from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, page 4

Patience is symbolized by the tireless worm, creeping over lofty summits, persevering in its intent.

from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, page 515

We reach the Science of Christianity through demonstration of the divine nature; but in this wicked world goodness will "be evil spoken of," and patience must bring experience.

from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, page 4

Philippians 4 : 7

Perfect

When man demonstrates Christian Science absolutely, he will be perfect. He can neither sin, suffer, be subject to matter, nor disobey the law of God.

from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, page 372

The divine demand, "Be ye therefore perfect," is scientific, and the human footsteps leading to perfection are indispensable.

from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, page 253

from Divinity Course and General Collectanea, (the “Blue Book”), by Mary Baker Eddy, page 226

Perfect Love

There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love.

I John 4:18

Perfect Models

We must form perfect models in thought and look at them continually, or we shall never carve them out in grand and noble lives. Let unselfishness, goodness, mercy, justice, health, holiness, love — the kingdom of heaven — reign within us, and sin, disease, and death will diminish until they finally disappear.

from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, page 248

Persecution

Remember, thou Christian martyr, it is enough if thou art found worthy to unloose the sandals of thy Master's feet! To suppose that persecution for righteousness' sake belongs to the past, and that Christianity to-day is at peace with the world because it is honored by sects and societies, is to mistake the very nature of religion. Error repeats itself. The trials encountered by prophet, disciple, and apostle, "of whom the world was not worthy," await, in some form, every pioneer of truth.

from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, page 28

Persecution represents a quality of human thought that Truth can take advantage of, as in the case of St. Paul. He persecuted Christians up to the point of killing them; but when Truth reversed this erroneous action, he became as zealous in behalf of Christianity, as he had been opposed to it before.

from Watching Point 130 in 500 Watching Points,
by Gilbert Carpenter

Conflict and persecution are the truest signs that can be given of the greatness of a cause or of an individual, provided this warfare is honest and a world-imposed struggle. Such conflict never ends till unconquerable right is begun anew, and hath gained fresh energy and final victory.

Personality

from Retrospection and Introspection by Mary Baker Eddy, page 73-74

What, then, is the material personality which suffers, sins, and dies? It is not man, the image and likeness of God, but man's counterfeit, the inverted likeness, the unlikeness called sin, sickness, and death. The unreality of the claim that a mortal is the true image of God is illustrated by the opposite natures of Spirit and matter, Mind and body, for one is intelligence while the other is non-intelligence.

Physician

A person skilled in the art of healing; one whose profession is to prescribe remedies for diseases.
In a spiritual sense, one that heals moral diseases; as a physician of the soul.

from the 1828 Webster’s Dictionary

Who is it that understands, unmistakably, a fraction of the actual Science of Mind-healing?

It is he who has fairly proven his knowledge on a Christian, mental, scientific basis; who has made his choice between matter and Mind, and proven the divine Mind to be the only physician. These are self-evident propositions: That man can only be Christianized through Mind; that without Mind the body is without action; that Science is a law of divine Mind. The conclusion follows that the correct Mind-healing is the proper means of Christianity, and is Science.

from <Miscellaneous Writings, by Mary Baker Eddy, page 269

That individual is the best healer who asserts himself the least, and thus becomes a transparency for the divine Mind, who is the only physician; the divine Mind is the scientific healer.

Poison

Another point to be noted in these pages is Mrs. Eddy’s frequent use of the names of various poisons, and her insistence that students use a terminology that included such names. On May 26, 1903, she said to her household: “If you take up arsenic, you will hit it in most of the cases in 1903.”

Mrs. Eddy was past mistress of the art of formulating arresting, as well as scientific, terminology that would challenge thought, when perhaps it had become jaded in its use of familiar arguments. A declaration loses its incisiveness through much use; and since the efficacy of Science is in proportion to the extent that thought is mentalized as well as spiritualized, the use of certain material terms in connection with that which is obviously mental, becomes a help in resolving things into thoughts, and so aiding one in reaching that vantage where one admits that, even in the human realm, when one tells the truth about the lie, all is mind. For instance, when one takes material poison and suffers ill effects, mortal mind, not matter, causes such effects.

Thus the lesson Mrs. Eddy was bringing home to her students, concerning mental causation, became more potent when she called upon them to handle certain poisons like arsenic and mercury, when it was evident that she was referring to no possibility of such poisons having been taken or being present materially. Thus she was referring to mesmeric poison, operating exactly as the hypnotist operates, when he causes a burn to appear with a piece office.

On August 9, 1900, she wrote to the Board of Directors, “The one devil, evil, takes thought by drugs as well as siege. The drugs are morphine, opium, hashish, arsenic, rhus-radicant, strychnine. There is a need of awakening before it is too late.”

There is no doubt, but that the effect of all mortal suggestions on the advancing student is like poison in the mental realm. Is it strange, therefore, that Mrs. Eddy should find this out, and instruct students to work accordingly?

from Watches, Prayers, and Arguments, given by Mary Baker Eddy, pages 16 to 17

Porter

Reverse the case. Stand porter at the door of thought. Admitting only such conclusions as you wish realized in bodily results, you will control yourself harmoniously. When the condition is present which you say induces disease, whether it be air, exercise, heredity, contagion, or accident, then perform your office as porter and shut out these unhealthy thoughts and fears. Exclude from mortal mind the offending errors; then the body cannot suffer from them. The issues of pain or pleasure must come through mind, and like a watchman forsaking his post, we admit the intruding belief, forgetting that through divine help we can forbid this entrance.

from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, pages 392 to 393

Prayer

Prayer is not to be used as a confessional to cancel sin. Such an error would impede true religion. Sin is forgiven only as it is destroyed by Christ, — Truth and Life. If prayer nourishes the belief that sin is cancelled, and that man is made better merely by praying, prayer is an evil. He grows worse who continues in sin because he fancies himself forgiven.

from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, page 5

Prayer cannot change the unalterable Truth, nor can prayer alone give us an understanding of Truth; but prayer, coupled with a fervent habitual desire to know and do the will of God, will bring us into all Truth. Such a desire has little need of audible expression. It is best expressed in thought and in life.

from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, page 11

PRAYER FOR ONESELF — I thank Thee, Father-Mother God, that neither ignorant, fraudulent, nor malicious mortal mind can reach me, affect me mentally, physically, financially, or otherwise; and I know it, for God is the only power; that I am not the victim of aggressive mental suggestion, nor the target of M.A.M. claiming to operate through any channel whatever, but I am the blessed legal child of God, spiritual, immortal, all-harmonious, perfect, happy, healthy, pure, sinless, free, and fearless and diseaseless, and deathless, expressing the substance of all good.

Hold yourself constantly and consciously under God’s eternal law of blessing, of happiness, harmony, health, peace, joy, power, progress, protection, abundance; there is no other law, — only a contrary mortal mind lie which you are awake and alert to, and not under.

Evening Prayer, from Watches, Prayers, and Arguments by Mary Baker Eddy

Prejudice

Because divine Science wars with so-called physical science, even as Truth wars with error, the old schools still oppose it. Ignorance, pride, or prejudice closes the door to whatever is not stereotyped. When the Science of being is universally understood, every man will be his own physician, and Truth will be the universal panacea.

from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, page 144

Pressure

Christian Scientists must live under the constant pressure of the apostolic command to come out from the material world and be separate. They must renounce aggression, oppression and the pride of power.

from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, page 451

Pride

As in Jesus' time, so to-day, tyranny and pride need to be whipped out of the temple, and humility and divine Science to be welcomed in. The strong cords of scientific demonstration, as twisted and wielded by Jesus, are still needed to purge the temples of their vain traffic in worldly worship and to make them meet dwelling-places for the Most High.

from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, page 142

Probation

Moral trial; the state of man in the present life, in which he has the opportunity of proving his character and being qualified for a happier state.

from the 1828 Webster’s Dictionary

Man’s probation after death is the necessity of his immortality; for good dies not and evil is self-destructive, therefore evil must be mortal and self-destroyed. If man should not progress after death, but should remain in error, he would be inevitably self-annihilated. Those upon whom “the second death hath no power” are those who progress here and hereafter out of evil, their mortal element, and into good that is immortal; thus laying off the material beliefs that war against Spirit, and putting on the spiritual elements in divine Science.

from Miscellaneous Writings, by Mary Baker Eddy, page 2

Progress

Progress is born of experience. It is the ripening of mortal man, through which the mortal is dropped for the immortal. Either here or hereafter, suffering or Science must destroy all illusions regarding life and mind, and regenerate material sense and self. The old man with his deeds must be put off. Nothing sensual or sinful is immortal. The death of a false material sense and of sin, not the death of organic matter, is what reveals man and Life, harmonious, real, and eternal.

from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, page 296

Prophecy

The Science of Christian healing, or the basis and tendency thereof, can be taught, but the Principle of this Science can never be fully understood unless you strive for the spirit of Truth and Love; then quench not the spirit, and despise not prophecy, and let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall.

from Fragments gathered from Unpublished Items ascribed to Mary Baker Eddy, page 61

...real Christian Scientists understand the nature of prophecy. Foreseeing evil is but the ability to discern what already exists in mortal mind, and, if it stops there, is not only valueless but may lead to highly objectionable results, in belief, by serving the purposes of mental malpractice. If we can foresee evil we can, through Christian Science work, prevent evil from happening, and this is exactly what we should do. ... When such a prophecy is presented, something should occur within our own mental vision, where Science is being announced and its Principle is being declared, which will offset that prophecy, and all the beliefs that are said to justify it. ... The more radical this work is, the more certain are we to find the desired results in improved human conditions.

from Association Addresses by Bicknell Young, page 15 of the 1926 Address and page 2 and 4 of the 1921 Address

One morning Mrs. Eddy was examining us in her study, putting various questions to us. Finally she said, "Dear ones, you have answered well. Now that you have been so patient with Mother, what can she do for you?" We were all surprised at the question, but Mr. Strang, I believe it was, spoke up finally, "Mother, will you prophesy for us?" Her face clouded for just an instant, and then she said, "To perform the demonstration of prophecy always includes a temptation of animal magnetism. Now I have always found this rule of help: When you are about to prophesy, always handle animal magnetism and all need for prophecy will be gone. Why? Because faith in God will have taken its place!" But next day she referred to this again, and said, "My dear students, God has told me this much for you: At the end of this century, Christian Science will be the only universally acknowledged religion in the world, because the other religions have no demonstrating basis. But much work remains undone, much self-denial waits for us all before this can be fulfilled. The main thing is for us to handle M. A. M. that would make us fold our hands till this manifests itself. But Truth demands work, work, work! Never forget that!"

From Collectanea of items by and about Mary Baker Eddy, pages 68 to 69 of the Addenda

God selected many students for many positions in Mrs. Eddy's time. When they failed — if they did — it was not God's mistake in selecting them, but it was their failure properly to take advantage of and utilize His knowledge, and thus make themselves worthy. This is the law and the prophets. First, we perceive the truth as a prophecy, and then through the law, we make it permanent. Without prophecy one would never heal a case, and without law one could never make it permanent. The practitioner must perceive the perfection of the patient, although to the senses that perfection is not acknowledged. Then he uses the law to dissipate the illusion so that that which we know, will be acknowledged by the senses as well as by the understanding.

from Mary Baker Eddy, Her Spiritual Precepts, by Gilbert Carpenter

If Mrs. Eddy saw that divine Mind was entering universal consciousness at a certain rate, she could prophesy that within a certain length of time divine Mind would come into the ascendency to such a degree, that the entire outward manifestation would change. In making this prophecy she wanted students to feel that this change would come in an appreciable length of time, since, if they felt that it would be millions of years before it would come, they might lag in their present effort.

Mrs. Eddy knew that in this process mortal mind's latent opposition to Truth would come to the surface and be manifested in war, pestilence, famine, want and woe. On page 96 of Science and Health she writes, “Mortal error will vanish in a moral chemicalization. This mental fermentation has begun, and will continue until all errors of belief yield to understanding.”

Knowledge of what is taking place in the mental realm, a work which according to Mrs. Eddy will be completed in the year 2100, should cause students of today to work harder and to be more determined to keep divine Mind in the ascendency, since they have nothing to fear! The whole world is gradually coming over to the side of Truth, as error is being destroyed. It is true that mortals will gradually lose the manifestation of mortal mind, because mortal mind is losing its control in the mental realm.

It was as if Mrs. Eddy had said, “I can look ahead and see that as divine Mind comes into greater ascendency, the whole world will be saved, since the manifestation of general thought will change to accord with spiritual consciousness. Those who welcome it will be lifted up, while those who resist it will be cast down, as they see that which they prize disappearing, which is only part of a dream.”

Quotes on Mary Baker Eddy's place

Very gently the Teacher asked if any would translate passages from the Bible into the new tongue for her, and started the first young man who volunteered on Luke 24:1. The second to volunteer was Mrs. Mims and the Teacher called her to the platform to sit by her side saying she wanted all to see her. When she translated the second verse of Luke 24 (“And they found the stone rolled away from the sepulchre.”) Mrs. Mims started by saying, “The stone was the concentrated human belief that life was limited, and they saw that Life had rolled it away and that man was immortal — that he was never born and never dies.” But she did not stop there. She went on to say:

They saw what our beloved mother has through Science and Health enabled us to see. Through the book we have seen all that they saw and more, and we owe it all to her, to this beloved one who is God’s messenger today.

After she had returned to her seat, the Mother said that she had given a beautiful exegesis but “I have one fault to find — it was not necessary to mention me.” The class was deeply moved: one arose, and with eyes full of tears said, “Mother, how could we forget you?” Judge Hanna stood and in heart-rending tones said:

Mother, let me tell you this. Sometimes all the machinations of evil that are conceivable to the human mind seem to be hurled at us, and sometimes for days the world seems black. Every argument that the ingenuity of evil can suggest whispers, trying to hide your mission, and the light returns only when we see you as you are the revelator of this Truth.

The spontaneity of the occasion was beautiful to behold as one after another arose and expressed the importance to him of acknowledging the Mother’s position. A strange wonderful look of humility and self-effacement was on her face along with tears of joy. Then she responded:

My dear children, if you had not seen it, I should have had to teach you this. I could not have avoided telling you that when my students become blinded to me as the one through whom Truth has come in this age, they miss the path. I would have had to tell you.

from The Founding by Doris Grekel, pages 365 to 366

...a true sense of [Mary Baker Eddy] is essential to the understanding of Christian Science; ... Reason

The dream that matter and error are something must yield to reason and revelation. Then mortals will behold the nothingness of sickness and sin, and sin and sickness will disappear from consciousness. The harmonious will appear real, and the inharmonious unreal.

Rebuttal to the claim that we worship Mary Baker Eddy

If the right thinker and worker’s servitude is duly valued, he is not thereby worshipped. One’s idol is by no means his servant, but his master. And they who love a good work or good workers are themselves workers who appreciate a life, and labor to awake the slumbering capability of man. And what the best thinker and worker has said and done, they are not far from saying and doing. As a rule the Adam-race are not apt to worship the pioneer of spiritual ideas, — but ofttimes to shun him as their tormentor. Only the good man loves the right thinker and worker, and cannot worship him, for that would destroy this man’s goodness.

Serpent

Serpent (ophis, in Greek; nacash, in Hebrew). Subtlety; a lie; the opposite of Truth, named error; the first statement of mythology and idolatry; the belief in more than one God; animal magnetism; the first lie of limitation; finity; the first claim that there is an opposite of Spirit, or good, termed matter, or evil; the first delusion that error exists as fact; the first claim that sin, sickness, and death are the realities of life. The first audible claim that God was not omnipotent and that there was another power, named evil, which was as real and eternal as God, good.

Sheep

Sheep. Innocence; inoffensiveness; those who follow their leader.

from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, page 594

My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me:

John 10 : 27

15 So when they had dined, Jesus saith to Simon Peter, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me more than these? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my lambs.
16 He saith to him again the second time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my sheep.
17 He saith unto him the third time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? Peter was grieved because he said unto him the third time, Lovest thou me? And he said unto him, Lord, thou knowest all things; thou knowest that I love thee. Jesus saith unto him, Feed my sheep.

John 21:15-17

Shem

Shem (Noah's son). A corporeal mortal; kindly affec  tion; love rebuking error; reproof of sensualism.

from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, page 594

Sick

Mortals think wickedly; consequently they are wicked. They think sickly thoughts, and so become sick. If sin makes sinners, Truth and Love alone can unmake them. If a sense of disease produces suffering and a sense of ease antidotes suffering, disease is mental, not material. Hence the fact that the human mind alone suffers, is sick, and that the divine Mind alone heals.

from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, page 270

Healing the sick and reforming the sinner are one and the same thing in Christian Science. Both cures require the same method and are inseparable in Truth. Hatred, envy, dishonesty, fear, and so forth, make a man sick, and neither material medicine nor Mind can help him permanently, even in body, unless it makes him better mentally, and so delivers him from his destroyers. The basic error is mortal mind. Hatred inflames the brutal propensities. The indulgence of evil motives and aims makes any man, who is above the lowest type of manhood, a hopeless sufferer.

Simplicity

Rule in Mrs. Eddy’s household: Simplicity, accuracy, and economy. Excuses are intolerable.

from Collectanea by Mary Baker Eddy, page 126

All is Love, peace and harmony. Heaven is right here. Truth reigns. There is no strife. Peace, be still. Truth has destroyed the error. Love has destroyed all hate. All is peace, Love and joy. Run, and not be weary. The need of the hour is simplicity, meekness and obedience.

from Watches, Prayers, and Arguments, given by Mary Baker Eddy, page 41

Sin

Three cardinal points must be gained before poor humanity is regenerated and Christian Science is demonstrated: (1) A proper sense of sin; (2) repentance; (3) the understanding of good. Evil is a negation: it never started with time, and it cannot keep pace with eternity. Mortals’ false senses pass through three states and stages of human consciousness before yielding error. The deluded sense must first be shown its falsity through a knowledge of evil as evil, so-called. Without a sense of one’s oft-repeated violations of divine law, the individual may become morally blind, and this deplorable mental state is moral idiocy. The lack of seeing one’s deformed mentality, and of repentance therefor, deep, never to be repented of, is retarding, and in certain morbid instances stopping, the growth of Christian Scientists. Without a knowledge of his sins, and repentance so severe that it destroys them, no person is or can be a Christian Scientist.

Mankind thinks either too much or too little of sin. The sensitive, sorrowing saint thinks too much of it: the sordid sinner, or the so-called Christian asleep, thinks too little of sin.

Success in sin is downright defeat.

Son

Son. The Son of God, the Messiah or Christ. The son of man, the offspring of the flesh. "Son of a year."

from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, page 594

Sons of God

1 Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not.
2 Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.
3 And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure.

I John 3 : 1-3

Sorrow

Sorrow for wrong-doing is but one step towards reform and the very easiest step. The next and great step required by wisdom is the test of our sincerity, — namely, reformation. To this end we are placed under the stress of circumstances. Temptation bids us repeat the offence, and woe comes in return for what is done. So it will ever be, till we learn that there is no discount in the law of justice and that we must pay "the uttermost farthing." The measure ye mete "shall be measured to you again," and it will be full "and running over."

from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, page 5

Soul

One Soul, from the 1936 Primary Class by Bicknell Young

Soul, or Spirit, is God, unchangeable and eternal; and man coexists with and reflects Soul, God, for man is God's image.

from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, page 120

Soul is the substance, Life, and intelligence of man, which is individualized, but not in matter. Soul can never reflect anything inferior to Spirit.

Man is the expression of Soul. The Indians caught some glimpses of the underlying reality, when they called a certain beautiful lake "the smile of the Great Spirit." Separated from man, who expresses Soul, Spirit would be a nonentity; man, divorced from Spirit, would lose his entity. But there is, there can be, no such division, for man is coexistent with God.

from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, pages 477 to 478

Soul has infinite resources with which to bless mankind, and happiness would be more readily attained and would be more secure in our keeping, if sought in Soul. Higher enjoyments alone can satisfy the cravings of immortal man. We cannot circumscribe happiness within the limits of personal sense. The senses confer no real enjoyment.

The good in human affections must have ascendency over the evil and the spiritual over the animal, or happiness will never be won.

from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, pages 60 to 61

"Fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell," said Jesus. A careful study of this text shows that here the word soul means a false sense or material consciousness. The command was a warning to beware, not of Rome, Satan, nor of God, but of sin. Sickness, sin, and death are not concomitants of Life or Truth. No law supports them. They have no relation to God wherewith to establish their power.

from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, page 196

Christian Science reverses the seeming relation of Soul and body and makes body tributary to Mind. Thus it is with man, who is but the humble servant of the restful Mind, though it seems otherwise to finite sense. But we shall never understand this while we admit that soul is in body or mind in matter, and that man is included in non-intelligence.

from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, pages 119 to 120

Knowing that Soul and its attributes were forever manifested through man, the Master healed the sick, gave sight to the blind, hearing to the deaf, feet to the lame, thus bringing to light the scientific action of the divine Mind on human minds and bodies and giving a better understanding of Soul and salvation.

Spiritualism

Chapter 4 — Christian Science versus Spiritualism, from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy

Spiritualism, from the Association Address of 1938 by Bicknell Young

Spiritualizing thought

Spiritualizing thought is getting away from limitation. The Christian Scientist must stand as Mind. He must recognize the power and dominion of the Mind which is all there is. Get this reality of being, for it is fundamental to a demonstrable understanding.

from The 1936 Primary Class, by Bicknell Young, pages 32

Spiritual sense

Since the author's discovery of the might of Truth in the treatment of disease as well as of sin, her system has been fully tested and has not been found wanting; but to reach the heights of Christian Science, man must live in obedience to its divine Principle. To develop the full might of this Science, the discords of corporeal sense must yield to the harmony of spiritual sense, even as the science of music corrects false tones and gives sweet concord to sound.

from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, pages vii to viii

If spiritual sense always guided men, there would grow out of ecstatic moments a higher experience and a better life with more devout self-abnegation and purity.

from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, page 7

As light destroys darkness and in the place of darkness all is light, so (in absolute Science) Soul, or God, is the only truth-giver to man. Truth destroys mortality, and brings to light immortality. Mortal belief (the material sense of life) and immortal Truth (the spiritual sense) are the tares and the wheat, which are not united by progress, but separated.

from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, page 72

Saul of Tarsus beheld the way — the Christ, or Truth — only when his uncertain sense of right yielded to a spiritual sense, which is always right. Then the man was changed. Thought assumed a nobler outlook, and his life became more spiritual.

from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, page 326

Standard

Divine Science explains the abstract statement that there is one Mind by the following self-evident proposition: If God, or good, is real, then evil, the unlikeness of God, is unreal. And evil can only seem to be real by giving reality to the unreal. The children of God have but one Mind. How can good lapse into evil, when God, the Mind of man, never sins? The standard of perfection was originally God and man. Has God taken down His own standard, and has man fallen?

from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, page 470

Mortal thought must obtain a better basis, get nearer the truth of being, or health will never be universal, and harmony will never become the standard of man.

from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, page 553

The relinquishment of all faith in death and also of the fear of its sting would raise the standard of health and morals far beyond its present elevation, and would enable us to hold the banner of Christianity aloft with unflinching faith in God, in Life eternal.

from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, page 426

In order to heal by Science, you must not be ignorant of the moral and spiritual demands of Science nor disobey them. Moral ignorance or sin affects your demonstration, and hinders its approach to the standard in Christian Science.

from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, page 483

If we have triumphed sufficiently over the errors of material sense to allow Soul to hold the control, we shall loathe sin and rebuke it under every mask. Only in this way can we bless our enemies, though they may not so construe our words. We cannot choose for ourselves, but must work out our salvation in the way Jesus taught. In meekness and might, he was found preaching the gospel to the poor. Pride and fear are unfit to bear the standard of Truth, and God will never place it in such hands.

Suffering

To cause suffering as the result of sin, is the means of destroying sin. Every supposed pleasure in sin will furnish more than its equivalent of pain, until belief in material life and sin is destroyed. To reach heaven, the harmony of being, we must understand the divine Principle of being.

from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, page 6

Suffering is no less a mental condition than is enjoyment. You cause bodily sufferings and increase them by admitting their reality and continuance, as directly as you enhance your joys by believing them to be real and continuous. When an accident happens, you think or exclaim, "I am hurt!" Your thought is more powerful than your words, more powerful than the accident itself, to make the injury real.

Now reverse the process. Declare that you are not hurt and understand the reason why, and you will find the ensuing good effects to be in exact proportion to your disbelief in physics, and your fidelity to divine metaphysics, confidence in God as All, which the Scriptures declare Him to be.

from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, page 397

Waking to Christ's demand, mortals experience suffering. This causes them, even as drowning men, to make vigorous efforts to save themselves; and through Christ's precious love these efforts are crowned with success.

from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, page 22

Mortals move onward towards good or evil as time glides on. If mortals are not progressive, past failures will be repeated until all wrong work is effaced or rectified. If at present satisfied with wrong-doing, we must learn to loathe it. If at present content with idleness, we must become dissatisfied with it. Remember that mankind must sooner or later, either by suffering or by Science, be convinced of the error that is to be overcome.

Sustain

The truths of immortal Mind sustain man, and they annihilate the fables of mortal mind, whose flimsy and gaudy pretensions, like silly moths, singe their own wings and fall into dust.

Sin is unsustained by Truth, and sickness and death were overcome by Jesus, who proved them to be forms of error.

Science shows that material, conflicting mortal opinions and beliefs emit the effects of error at all times, but this atmosphere of mortal mind cannot be destructive to morals and health when it is opposed promptly and persistently by Christian Science. Thought

22 And he said unto his disciples, Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat; neither for the body, what ye shall put on.
23 The life is more than meat, and the body is more than raiment.
24 Consider the ravens: for they neither sow nor reap; which neither have storehouse nor barn; and God feedeth them: how much more are ye better than the fowls?
28 If then God so clothe the grass, which is to day in the field, and to morrow is cast into the oven; how much more will he clothe you, O ye of little faith?
29 And seek not ye what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink, neither be ye of doubtful mind.
30 For all these things do the nations of the world seek after: and your Father knoweth that ye have need of these things.
31 But rather seek ye the kingdom of God; and all these things shall be added unto you

Luke 12 : 22-31, in the King James Bible

Hold thought steadfastly to the enduring, the good, and the true, and you will bring these into your experience proportionably to their occupancy of your thoughts.

Unity

Unity, from Essays and Other Footprints, (the "Red Book"), by Mary Baker Eddy

Unknown

Unknown. That which spiritual sense alone comprehends, and which is unknown to the material senses.

Paganism and agnosticism may define Deity as "the great unknowable;" but Christian Science brings God much nearer to man, and makes Him better known as the All-in-all, forever near.

Paul saw in Athens an altar dedicated "to the unknown God." Referring to it, he said to the Athenians: "Whom therefore ye ignorantly worship, Him declare I unto you." (Acts xvii. 23.)

from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, page 596

Unscientific

I turned to the story of Paul’s defence in Jerusalem in Acts 22. Here it describes, how he made the unscientific admission that he had once been in bondage to sin. When he finished, the people cried out against him and bound him with thongs. When the chief captain arrived, however, Paul corrected his mistake and declared that he was free born. Then they removed his bonds.

Urim

Urim. Light. The rabbins believed that the stones in the breastplate of the high-priest had supernatural illumination, but Christian Science reveals Spirit, not matter, as the illuminator of all. The illuminations of Science give us a sense of the nothingness of error, and they show the spiritual inspiration of Love and Truth to be the only fit preparation for admission to the presence and power of the Most High.

Vaccination

Rather than quarrel over vaccination, I recommend, if the law demand, that an individual submit to this process, that he obey the law, and then appeal to the gospel to save him from bad physical results.

from Miscellaneous Writings, by Mary Baker Eddy, pages 219 to 220

Valley

Valley. Depression; meekness; darkness.

"Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil." (Psalm xxiii.4.)

Though the way is dark in mortal sense, divine Life and Love illumine it, destroy the unrest of mortal thought, the fear of death, and the supposed reality of error. Christian Science, contradicting sense, maketh the valley to bud and blossom as the rose.

from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, page 596

Veil

Veil. A cover; concealment; hiding; hypocrisy. The Jewish women wore veils over their faces in token of reverence and submission and in accordance with Pharisaical notions.

The Judaic religion consisted mostly of rites and ceremonies. The motives and affections of a man were of little value, if only he appeared unto men to fast. The great Nazarene, as meek as he was mighty, rebuked the hypocrisy, which offered long petitions for blessings upon material methods, but cloaked the crime, latent in thought, which was ready to spring into action and crucify God's anointed. The martyrdom of Jesus was the culminating sin of Pharisaism. It rent the veil of the temple. It revealed the false foundations and superstructures of superficial religion, tore from bigotry and superstition their coverings, and opened the sepulchre with divine Science, — immortality and Love.

Watch

40 And he cometh unto the disciples, and findeth them asleep, and saith unto Peter, What, could ye not watch with me one hour?
41 Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.

Matthew 26 : 40, 41

What is Watching?

Christian Scientists cannot watch too sedulously, or bar their doors too closely, or pray to God too fervently, for deliverance from the claims of evil. Thus doing, Scientists will silence evil suggestions, uncover their methods, and stop their hidden influence upon the lives of mortals. Rest assured that God in His wisdom will test all mankind on all questions; and then, if found faithful, He will deliver us from temptation and show us the powerlessness of evil, — even its utter nothingness.

Wholeness

Work half done is not yet done at all. Wholeness is the rule in Science. Continually going half the distance to a place will never get you there. An error half met is not met at all, for ‘an error in the premise is an error in the conclusion.

from Divinity Course and General Collectanea, (the "Blue Book"), by Mary Baker Eddy, page 218

We must see the nothingness of mortal belief of health, and see true health — wholeness, which is always the same. You and all reflect it. Keep your lamps trimmed and burning, ready to give light to any call.

Question. — What is God?

Answer. — God is incorporeal, divine, supreme, infinite Mind, Spirit, Soul, Principle, Life, Truth, Love.

Question. — Are these terms synonymous?

Answer. — They are. They refer to one absolute God. They are also intended to express the nature, essence, and wholeness of Deity. The attributes of God are justice, mercy, wisdom, goodness, and so on.

from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, page 465

Wilderness

Wilderness. Loneliness; doubt; darkness. Spontaneity of thought and idea; the vestibule in which a material sense of things disappears, and spiritual sense unfolds the great facts of existence.

from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, page 597

Will

Will. The motive-power of error; mortal belief; animal power. The might and wisdom of God.

"For this is the will of God." (I Thessalonians iv. 3.)

Will, as a quality of so-called mortal mind, is a wrongdoer; hence it should not be confounded with the term as applied to Mind or to one of God's qualities.

from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, page 597

Christian Science silences human will, quiets fear with Truth and Love, and illustrates the unlabored motion of the divine energy in healing the sick. self-seeking, envy, passion, pride, hatred, and revenge are cast out by the divine Mind which heals disease. The human will which maketh and worketh a lie, hiding the divine Principle of harmony, is destructive to health, and is the cause of disease rather than its cure.

from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, page 445

Every Christian Scientist, every conscientious teacher of the Science of Mind-healing, knows that human will is not Christian Science, and he must recognize this in order to defend himself from the influence of human will. He feels morally obligated to open the eyes of his students that they may perceive the nature and methods of error of every sort, especially any subtle degree of evil, deceived and deceiving. All mental malpractice arises from ignorance or malice aforethought. It is the injurious action of one mortal mind controlling another from wrong motives, and it is practised either with a mistaken or a wicked purpose.

from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, page 451

Human will-power is not Science. Human will belongs to the so-called material senses, and its use is to be condemned. Willing the sick to recover is not the metaphysical practice of Christian Science, but is sheer animal magnetism. Human will-power may infringe the rights of man. It produces evil continually, and is not a factor in the realism of being. Truth, and not corporeal will, is the divine power which says to disease, "Peace, be still."

from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, page 144

Will-power is but a product of belief, and this belief commits depredations on harmony. Human will is an animal propensity, not a faculty of Soul. Hence it cannot govern man aright. Christian Science reveals Truth and Love as the motive-powers of man. Will — blind, stubborn, and headlong — cooperates with appetite and passion. From this cooperation arises its evil. From this also comes its powerlessness, since all power belongs to God, good.

from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, page 490

Dost thou "love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind"? This command includes much, even the surrender of all merely material sensation, affection, and worship. This is the El Dorado of Christianity. It involves the Science of Life, and recognizes only the divine control of Spirit, in which Soul is our master, and material sense and human will have no place.

from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, page 9

SMan, being immortal, has a perfect indestructible life. It is the mortal belief which makes the body discordant and diseased in proportion as ignorance, fear, or human will governs mortals.

from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, page 209

Spirit shares not its strength with matter or with human will.

from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, page 194

The power of the human will should be exercised only in subordination to Truth; else it will misguide the judgment and free the lower propensities. It is the province of spiritual sense to govern man. Material, erring, human thought acts injuriously both upon the body and through it.

Will-power is capable of all evil. It can never heal the sick, for it is the prayer of the unrighteous; while the exercise of the sentiments — hope, faith, love — is the prayer of the righteous. This prayer, governed by Science instead of the senses, heals the sick.

In the scientific relation of God to man, we find that whatever blesses one blesses all, as Jesus showed with the loaves and the fishes, — Spirit, not matter, being the source of supply.

from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, page 206

There is no hypocrisy in Science. Principle is imperative. You cannot mock it by human will. Science is a divine demand, not a human. Always right, its divine Principle never repents, but maintains the claim of Truth by quenching error. The pardon of divine mercy is the destruction of error. If men understood their real spiritual source to be all blessedness, they would struggle for recourse to the spiritual and be at peace; but the deeper the error into which mortal mind is plunged, the more intense the opposition to spirituality, till error yields to Truth.

from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, page 329

Wind

Wind. That which indicates the might of omnipotence and the movements of God's spiritual government, encompassing all things. Destruction; anger; mortal passions.

The Greek word for wind (pneuma) is used also for spirit, as in the passage in John's Gospel, the third chapter, where we read: "The wind [pneuma] bloweth where it listeth... . So is every one that is born of the Spirit [pneuma]." Here the original word is the same in both cases, yet it has received different translations, as in other passages in this same chapter and elsewhere in the New Testament. This shows how our Master had constantly to employ words of material significance in order to unfold spiritual thoughts. In the record of Jesus' supposed death, we read: "He bowed his head, and gave up the ghost;" but this word ghost is pneuma. It might be translated wind or air, and the phrase is equivalent to our common statement, "He breathed his last." What Jesus gave up was indeed air, an etherealized form of matter, for never did he give up Spirit, or Soul.

Works of the flesh

19 Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness,
20 Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies,
21 Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.

Galatians 5 : 19-21

Worship

Year

Year. A solar measurement of time; mortality; space for repentance.

"One day is with the Lord as a thousand years." (II Peter iii. 8.)

One moment of divine consciousness, or the spiritual understanding of Life and Love, is a foretaste of eternity. This exalted view, obtained and retained when the Science of being is understood, would bridge over with life discerned spiritually the interval of death, and man would be in the full consciousness of his immortality and eternal harmony, where sin, sickness, and death are unknown. Time is a mortal thought, the divisor of which is the solar year. Eternity is God's measurement of Soul-filled years.

18 The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised,
19 To preach the acceptable year of the Lord.

Zeal

Zeal. The reflected animation of Life, Truth, and Love. Blind enthusiasm; mortal will.

from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, page 599

Be temperate in thought, word, and deed. Meekness and temperance are the jewels of Love, set in wisdom. Restrain untempered zeal. “Learn to labor and to wait.” Of old the children of Israel were saved by patient waiting. “The kingdom of heaven suffereth violence, and the violent take it by force!” said Jesus. Therefore are its spiritual gates not captured, nor its golden streets invaded.
