The handling of mental malpractice and malicious animal magnetism is a task that is still a large part of the work of Christian Scientists. And this includes handling the malicious hypnotic work of Roman Catholicism.
From time to time I have had requests for information on Roman Catholicism and how to handle it in Christian Science. I also have received from various sources papers by early Scientists on Roman Catholicism, along with written and recorded statements attributed to Mrs. Eddy. These papers and statements present invaluable instruction in handling malicious mental malpractice.
They indicate that the need to handle Roman Catholicism is as vital today as it was in Mrs. Eddy's time. Therefore, these papers are being shared with the advancing student of Christian Science.
The remark is sometimes made by Christian Scientists that we no longer should concern ourselves with handling Roman Catholicism, that Mrs. Eddy completed this work when she was here and the time is past for any further need to do work along this line. Or it is said that far too much was made of this by the early workers in the movement.
But in reading the papers in this transcript and in observing the rapid decline of Christian Science Churches, Reading Rooms, Sunday Schools and the organization in Boston, the question arises, have we been lulled to sleep with these statements? Has our apathy and ignorance concerning Roman Catholicism been the reason for the failure of our church thus far to fulfill its mission?
When church officials are questioned about the decline of the Christian Science church, the remark is made that all churches are going through this crisis. But whatever the state of other denominations, the Christian Science church with its healing truth should not be going through such a crisis. These papers indicate that our problems are due more to our apathy in handling malicious mental malpractice than in the trend of the times.
When Mrs. Eddy established Christian Science, the Roman Catholic church appeared to be an invincible power representing the largest religious organization in the Christian world. Today Catholics and Protestants alike are exposing the unchristian political structure and methods of the church in Rome. Roman Catholics themselves are speaking out against its policies and practices. In looking back we see that this organization, so all-powerful for centuries, began to crumble with the coming of Christian Science. This must surely be due to the metaphysical work of those alert Christian Scientists who took to heart Mrs. Eddy's warning to handle Roman Catholicism. But this recent decline in the power of Romanism should not lead us to believe that we no longer need to be alert to handle it.
Although the church in Rome is going through difficult times, it is still a strong force dedicated to opposing and destroying Christian Science. Our own daily alertness to handling Roman Catholicism for ourselves, our Cause, and the world is a continuation of the work of the early Scientists and insures that Romanism will not bury Christian Science. Rather, our prayerful work will annul and reverse the mental work of Romanism and enable the healing Truth to reach all mankind.
This collection of papers is focused on uncovering and handling animal magnetism in the form of Roman Catholicism. We have reproduced these papers without editing them. Some papers had no name on them and there was no way of actually determining who wrote them. Some have similar or identical passages, showing that the authors used the same notes or received their instructions from the same teacher. However, the lack of authors' names and repetition in a few instances does not detract from the strong and forthright manner in which these ideas are presented.
The time seems right for publishing these papers. Our age is so aware of the power of secret hypnotism and silent mental manipulation, that these papers should not frighten, but rather inform and heal. They are not intended to harm or offend anyone, but to help free humanity of mental darkness and bondage. This freedom from the power of secret malicious mental malpractice can only come as we learn how it operates and how to handle it in Christian Science.

(From The American Standard Magazine of November 1, 1924) An exposure of the sinister mental methods, used by Papal Adepts, to influence the thoughts and acts of politicians and other persons.
The advent of Radio Broadcasting has led many people to give study to certain mental phenomena which they had never before considered. You who read these lines are aware of the striking fact that there is now passing through this room where you are sitting a continuous current of thought expressed in words, tones, or notes of instruments. If you have a radio receiver set, you can adjust it so it will make these sounds audible; it will reproduce the lecture, the song, recital or musical instrument as if the performer were in your room, instead of many miles away.
From the lesson of Radio Communication, two facts are being impressed upon the public mind — First, that the world we live in, and the things in it, are mental in nature and origin; and second, that thought can be and is projected through space, to reach a distant object, wholly by mental means, without mechanical equipment.
It is obvious that all communication is from one mind to another; the flesh does not transmit intelligence nor does inanimate matter have in it any conscious life; for when the mind is withdrawn from the fleshly body, the lifeless clay is all that remains. But the fact that one mind can transmit thought to another mind at a distance is a new discovery to the general public, though long well known to the initiate.
We hear much today of mental phenomena, mental influence, and drugless methods of healing diseases. All these things are evidence that thought is a force for good and evil.:according to the nature of the thinker, and that thoughts projected into consciousness can reach other minds at a distance, just as radio broadcasting can reach receivers far removed from the central station, provided the receivers are attuned to a sympathetic pitch.
This phenomena of thought transference, when used by an individual Christly character, and with the knowledge and consent of the person who is receiving the mental influence, can be employed for beneficial ends, in correcting discordant mental conditions, conquering fear and limitations, and healing diseases, which are always mental in origin. But when used by unscrupulous adepts for evil purposes, this sort of mental telepathy becomes a terrible menace — a secret and powerful weapon of destruction, by which the minds of persons can be manipulated without their knowledge, to their grave injury and damage.
Mental telepathy of this latter sort is the basis of Jesuitism. The efficacy of thought transference through concentration of the mind and exertion of the human will (which is always illegitimate) has long been a familiar secret within the Jesuit Order, and has been practiced by the Jesuit adepts for centuries. The secret of the Jesuits has been guarded and protected with the utmost efficiency, during all the years of the Order's history; but no secrets are hidden from the mind illumined with the light of Christ to whom "There is nothing covered that shall not be revealed; and hid, that shall not be known." (Matt. 10:26)
No country which harbors Jesuits is safe; for the advanced members of this Papal Order are trained adepts in mental manipulation, and are schooled in a brand of ethics which is the most immoral and corrupt ever conceived by the carnal mind of fallen humanity. Lying deception, trickery, sophistry, and chicanery are raised to a status of fine arts by Jesuit Theologians on the general maxim that everything is legitimate provided it advances the cause of the Pope. Jesuit Theologians, such as Suarez and Bussambaum, have not hesitated to advocate assassination as a legitimate practice of Jesuitism; it is the opposite of Christianity, and the most deadly fruit of the forbidden "Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil," the highest attenuation of wickedness of which the human mind is capable.
At various times in history the Jesuits have been driven out of nearly every country in Europe at the point of the sword. In America "They have never yet been molested, for we are still young in the understanding of evil," and only a few are awake.
Still, one watchman upon the walls is enough to save the city.
To a Roman Catholic, a Protestant is not considered as worthy of any consideration. He is a heretic, lost to salvation, because he does not recognize the Pope as God upon the earth and Vicar to Christ. To kill a heretic is not a sin from the Papal point of view, therefore, no compunction whatever is felt at the manipulating the mind of a person who is outside of the Roman Catholic System.
When a man in America becomes a prominent factor in national affairs, such as President, Cabinet Member, Judge of an important court, or Governor of a State, the Jesuits single him out for their sinister attentions. Year in and year out there is not one hour in the twenty-four that the man holding the office of President of The United States is free from the occult efforts of Jesuits and other Papists, who are adept in mental practice, to control and manipulate his thought. Relays of trained workers, operating upon pre-arranged schedule, send forth their aggressive mental suggestions, not as a rule broadcast, like a radio, to all quarters, but specifically aimed at the person whom the Jesuits desire to manipulate and whose name is held by them in mind for this purpose. Just as you may call a person on the telephone, to whom you desire to speak, so the Jesuit adepts speak mentally to the specific person whom they wish to reach. They hold his name in mind, concentrate their mental forces upon him, striving to control him, exactly as the hypnotist mentally controls his subject and makes him do whatever the hypnotist wills.
In electrical magnetism, if two bodies are magnetized in a certain manner they are strongly attracted; but if the opposite electrical condition prevails the two poles will forcibly repel each other. Likewise, in the mental realm there must be some degree of affinity between the projector of the thought and the receiver, just as the radio receiving set must be attuned to the proper wave length in order to produce the words and sounds sent in the air.
An individual who has an understanding of mental practice, and who has a Christian character, has the power to repel Jesuit manipulations and he remains unaffected — but at this hour such persons are few. Any human weakness affords an opening for Jesuitism, such as ambition, pride, sensuality, or lust for place or power. By mentally addressing their arguments to such avenues of approach, Jesuit adepts are able to gain an entrance into the consciousness of the person whose mind they desire to manipulate.
Through mental means it is possible to suggest fear, doubt, fretful irritability and antipathy towards another person, diseases of various kinds, poisons, discouragement, even a desire to destroy one's self. Opinions upon such matters of importance can be suggested mentally to a person who is being manipulated by Jesuits, in such a manner (secret) that he thinks he is forming an independent judgment from his own thought; and in this way, through skillful and gradual manipulations, step by step, he can be led to take action or form opinions that he would never sponsor if left to his own proclivities.
Obviously the efficiency of Jesuitism is immensely increased if a mind strongly sympathetic to it can be strategically placed close to the desired spot. If a public man has a private secretary or other assistants who are Roman Catholics, that mind, attuned to Jesuitism by natural inclination and training, acts as a receiver to amplify the mental suggestions, and reinforce their potency, so that the individual Roman Catholic's mind acts as a magnetic receiver and a transmitter of Jesuitism. An individual highly sensitized to mental phenomena and spiritually alert, can "feel the thought" of the Roman Catholic as soon as he comes in contact with it.
Beside their mental attacks upon specific persons, Jesuits broadcast waves of suggestions addressed impartially to all nonRomanists intending to accomplish certain objects desired by papery. At present the concentrated forces of Jesuitism are active in striving to propagate two suggestions — "Tolerance" and "Religious Immunity". Every effort is being made.to convince the public that there is a virtue in non-resistance to evil, that we must be broadminded, must "live and let live," and not interfere with or oppose the evil doer, because "it is none of our business."
This attitude of non-resistance to evil, indifference and apathy, is in itself an evil of a serious sort. We have the example of Christ Jesus, who said, "I come not to send peace but a sword," (Matt. 10:34); who said of the pagan temple, "There shall not be left one stone upon another, that shall not be thrown down"; "Generation of vipers"; "Liar and the Father of it"; "Murderer from the beginning"; "How can you escape the damnation of hell?" etc.
The Jesuit curses and anathemas that have been discovered and published at various times, addressed to opponents of Papery, contain specific mental arguments intended to suggest disease to various parts of the body, such as eyes, teeth, stomach, liver, heart, lungs, every member of the physical structure. Such attacks of mental assassins have been responsible for the destruction of many persons in the past, who have stood in the way of Jesuit designs.
Jesuits are especially adept in creating schemes, misunderstandings, antagonisms and factions. One of their favorite maxims is "Divide and conquer." To accomplish anything in the world, a certain amount of organization is required — and there is usually more or less friction between component parts, which has to be overcome. Jesuits are skillful in magnifying this friction, in creating unreasonable antipathies between one person and another, and in stimulating the material ambitions of rival leaders, thus splitting their opponents into factions, and papalizing usefulness of a movement. "Boring from within" is a potent Jesuit practice. For the advancement of the purposes of the Jesuit order and the Roman Catholic system of which it is part, a Jesuit is encouraged to pretend to adopt whatever creed he desires, to take oaths of fealty to any organization, fraternity, government, or institution which the Jesuits desire to manipulate. Jesuit devotees who have concentrated their lives to the purpose of papery, may prepare themselves over many years to accomplish certain ends.
Few, if any, of the Protestant Fraternities are free of Jesuit spies, in the guise of loyal members, even leaders. Protestant sects undoubtedly have within their ministry concealed Jesuits, at work to destroy from within; and in addition to the Jesuits themselves, it must be remembered that there are types of minds peculiarly amenable to Jesuit control suggestion, just as certain persons are specially adapted to serve as subjects for hypnotists, who can make them do whatever they wish.
In addition to the intentional manipulators, such as Jesuits and protocol Jews, skilled in oriental occultism, it should be remembered that the entire world of consciousness in which we dwell is mental, and that two mental forces seem to be constantly operating, namely good and evil, truth and error, the Christ-mind and the carnal evil mind of the flesh. In reality God or good is all and the carnal evil mind has no existence; but it has a counterfeit existence — as a fraudulent claim of Biblical allegory, only so far as we listen to it and admit its illegitimate argument.
An endless stream of thought is constantly floating past us in the mental realm, just as the vibrations of radio communications.
We receive and respond to as much good or evil as our natures may be attuned to.
"The mind is the measure of man." Thoughts are things and thi.ngs are thoughts expressed. Each person takes from the mental realm that which he is in tune with. The intelligent spiritual thinker can deliberately exclude what is evil and dwell upon that which is good. St. Paul advised, "Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report, if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things." (Phil. 4:8)
The individual of Christly character, imbued with the spirit that is exhaled from the pages of the New Testament, and who strives constantly to partake of the nature of his Exemplar, Christ, is immune to the manipulations of the carnal mind or Jesuitism.
He is not attuned to that wave length. Moreover, since Jesuitical mental telepathy is an argument spoken to the consciousness by Jesuit adepts, and directed by his concentrated will towards the object of his attention, it can be nullified by a counter effort. Protection is afforded by developing and exerting one's own spiritual mental powers, and projecting thought with emphasis and conviction an opposing argument in some such fashion as the following:
"God is all, the only Cause and Creator, and I am God's child, and therefore subject only to the spiritual influence of God and His Christ. Since God is all, there can be no carnal mind or evil mind to influence my acts or thoughts. There is nothing in my thought to respond to evil, or afford an opening through which to enter my consciousness; for I banish all claims of hatred, malice revenge, greed, sensuality. I am obedient to the will of God and I am governed by the spiritual law of His Christ.
"No aggressive suggestions from Jesuit manipulations can touch my consciousness or enter my thought, for it is already filled with Truth and Love. My health and my strength are from the Christ-Mind, therefore no mental arrow can reach me in any part or organ of my body, which is not flesh, but is the immortal image of God and my Creator. I bid every claim of evil: 'Return and take effect in your sender.'
"Divine Love covers and protects me with impenetrable armor; for 'He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most high shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. He shall cover me with His feathers and under His wings shall I trust. His truth shall be my shield and buckler. Because I have made the Lord, which is my refuge, even the most high, my habitation, there shall no evil befall me, neither shall any plague come nigh my dwelling; for He shall give His angels charge over me to keep me in all my ways." (Ps. 91)
The spiritually minded return good for evil, love for hate, and thus defend themselves from mental assassins, through the spiritual mental armor with which Christ renders his followers invulnerable to the hypnotic suggestions of the enemy of God and His Son, Christ.
This article was copied originally from the files of the Chicago Public Library on Randolph Street. The copyist comments, "It is practically impossible to get a librarian to let you see the magazine in their files. Interesting, isn't it? Not too long after this article appeared the magazine was put out of business."
A sense of real brotherhood in Christian Science impels me to write you this letter. For more than three years, I have been reading your articles in the Sentinel and I have progressed in the knowledge of the English language and in the knowledge of Christian Science; I have become conscious of each statement of Truth in them.
To make my statement clear, I must give the full statement of my coming into Christian Science. I am a Hungarian. When my University work was finished, I became a student of International Diplomacy in the Eastern Academy, Budapest. Before I finished my diplomatic course, I became hopelessly sick. One of my uncles – a leading physician in Hungary and also a professor of clinics of Budapest, sent me to New York with the hope that his friend, who is in the front rank of the medical profession in America, would be able to help me. I not only went to him, but from city to city seeking help.
Finally the doctors sent me to Los Angeles, telling me that if the climate did not help me, there was no hope whatsoever. There in Los Angeles Christian Science found me at a time I was so ill that my friends were preparing for my death. Christian Science healed me marvelously, and when my healing took place, I could not speak English at all. Two months later I became a student of Christian Science, impelled with the desire to understand what had wrought the change. I was so pleased with its teaching that several years ago I took class instruction, and since then have devoted all my time to the practice of Christian Science.
My experience in Christian Science is full of events. In the three larger cities of America in which I have lived, my work has made me acquainted with the practical operation in the field and I have found that so-called “Black Magic” works very widely among Christian Scientists. I have found the cause of this subtle error to be the fact that the average Christian Scientist lacks the right knowledge of how and why animal magnetism works. I have prayed for a long time that I might be able to put into a letter to you the record of my knowledge and experience as to what is to become of the seeming discord in our churches and the unchristian methods of so many practitioners all over the field, also the unhealthy morals of many so-called prominent or leading Christian Scientists.
As a loyal student of Mrs. Eddy’s works and a member of The Mother Church, I cannot ignore the facts or trend of events, for, if this hypocrisy shall continue under the guise of Christian Science, I ask you, what will happen? What happened in the early Christian church? It became a material organization, and it seemingly flourishes still, but without any foundation whatsoever and bound for dissolution.
The aim of this letter is not to condemn, but to explain. As a member of The Mother Church, I feel that it is my uttermost duty to give you the facts that have not been published in English, and which evidently are not known by even the thinkers among Christian Scientists.
The facts which sustained and encouraged and illuminated my thought in what I am writing, you will note in Revelation 12:14 and 17, prophesying that apostasy of materialism and mammon worship in our ranks, which superseded the former hatred of the revelator, with which her seed was so quickly and terribly afflicted (that is, changed from love to hatred towards her) earlier, after the woman, clothed in the sun and the moon under her feet, had appeared on earth. It is plain, from these two verses, that the Revelator understood and foresaw the present phase of war with the remnant of her seed.
As a member of the leading Academy of Hungary, I had access to a great work published only in the Hungarian language by Armin Von Berg, a scholar and thinker, who has traveled thirty-nine years in India, China, and Japan, for the definite purpose of uncovering the occult science of the East and its conspiracies with the assumption of power and their phenomena.
Educated Englishmen, acquainted with travelers and their records, gathered such stories as this occult work causing seed to germinate and plants to grow atmost at once, instead of taking weeks or months; also how mortals are made to disappear in the air, people to appear from the invisible, and so forth; but until Von Berg investigated the size and claims of the Oriental magic, it was not known that the lengths uniting the selfish and malicious purposes toward which they are working are complete, fixed and definite; that the ends and ambitions towards which they are driving are more determined, egotistical, cruel, and all-absorbing, as well as more thoroughly organized, than are those of the cat’s-paw — the Roman Catholic hierarchy.
In the fifth century, and from time to time thereafter, gifted and able Catholic priests have gone to India especially to learn the secrets of this esoteric magic, and have been permitted to master and teach to their order some degree of Black Art; but as indicated by the far lesser and weaker phenomena, not nearly what is possessed and practiced at its home.
It was uncovered that the Eastern Priestcraft’s approximated original evil, “the ape of God,” in its assumption of all temporal and eternal power, and the pride of Lucifer was deeply allied with the Western Priestcraft, Roman Catholicism, the latter as the throne, the former as the older, deeper, stronger power, organized evil, as the power behind the throne. The Eastern order, claiming to be the mightiest in the world, looks with contempt upon the cheap glory and crude materialism of Roman Catholicism and its secondary power, but the Eastern does not hesitate to use it and to work through it, while also desiring its destruction, for at least it names the name of Christ.
The Eastern order in incredible arrogance and ambition, works even to hypnotize governments, jealously setting the pace for its own Eastern civilization to be foremost, and enviously hating Western or Christian civilization, and having the purpose to destroy it; the English nation especially coming under the attacks because of its governmental possessions in India.
As a student of diplomatic service in the Eastern Academy, there were disclosed to me purposes and conspiracies of nation against nation, already on paper, which appalled me, whose insanity I found nothing adequate to account for, until I began to understand Christian Science, and discover that all is in thought, and thus saw the way illumined and traced between cause and effect; also how evil is uncovered as nothing.
When I was a boy, I saw Von Berg in the Public Library in Budapest and remember that he was known to be sometimes in tears. My uncle, to whom he was a near and dear friend, told me it was because of what he foresaw — what the Black Magic of the East would bring upon white civilization before we would be able to awaken to its designs. He said that when he told Queen Victoria, of whom he was a near and dear friend, what he had found out, she wept long and bitterly, but knew not what to do. We of the West, so softened and spiritualized, whitened until we approximate somewhat of the Christ man, can hardly conceive the nature of the dark Frankenstein of the East, the mere Adam-dream, unawakened by mercy and justice, with no word in its language that means Divine Love, dominated it knows not what, but close kin to what long simulated and baffled the power of God in Korea, — a mortal man that would rule immortal man; mental feudalism that would make the rest of mankind its unconscious, helpless vassals, approximately even fundamental evil, “the sea of human beliefs.” “His right foot was upon the sea.”
Even among the thinkers who are aware of the incredible assumptions and apparent manifestations of a creative and destructive power, I have not found one who knew that power to be consciously directed with desperate hatred against the forces of God in Christian Science, because Christian Science has long outstripped its pretensions. Mrs. Eddy, in her “Message of 1901,” under the heading “Mental Malpractice,” may have made reference to it. Because the nature of mortal error is what it is, “Envy, the great red dragon of the hour,” one might take for granted the counterfeit’s deadly rivalry toward the younger and stronger master of time and space, Christian Science. But that desperate purpose had first to fall under the law, “Nothing is covered that shall not be revealed nor hid that shall not be known.”
You are perhaps aware that three very high caste wonder-workers from India came some years ago to Boston for the purpose of killing Mrs. Eddy. Their order had been angered by the fear of being superseded by the achievements of Christian Science. Not succeeding at first, one of the workers went to Mrs. Eddy’s home, obtained entrance into her presence alone, where he thought she might be destroyed by the mental power more readily. Her insight and understanding uncovered his thought and purpose. It even brought about his repentance and reformation and she taught him Science. He returned to Calcutta a Christian Scientist to work for the Truth which would render the evil he had practiced powerless.
For the Christian Scientists who saw the phenomena it manifested in First Church, New York, I became convinced of the conspiracy existing between the simulation of deific power and Oriental magic, so exactly were its lying wonders duplicated — wonders practiced by it nearer its home, where mankind have been wont to locate the “Evil of Man,” the Oriental dream and dreamer.
Until I knew of the operation upon Scientists of this esoteric magic and conspiracy with the Jesuit thought, I was dismayed and unable to explain the moral and physical overthrow of some Scientists whom I knew were well intentioned.
When the meaning of Revelation 12:17 dawned upon me and I had traced the link of communication between effects and consummate causes, much evil was disclosed to me as nothing, for which I thank God and take courage. I know that even the war in Europe is not in Europe, but in human consciousness, where error is destroying itself. In working together with God, which the motive of Science and Health made possible, it has been my thought to get this knowledge to such Christian Scientists as can be depended upon to use it as it must be used in working out our salvation, and with this thought, I am writing to you and hoping to hear from you, for it comes to me that you will understand.
Hypnotism, or estoric magic, is the essence of evil or devil, the murderer or liar from the beginning. There is no good in it, and any use of it is dangerous. It is itself sin, and therefore leads to sin and death. It is the supposed opposite of God, and the sum total of evil. Ignorance of it and its phases makes one its victim. There is no true knowledge of it, for it is unreal; but one must be alert to its claims to power, action, and law. From this basis, you are always its master.
In tracing the trail of the serpent back to the ancient wonder-workers, sooth-sayers and magicians of Egypt, Chaldea and Babylon, we find it to be that material knowledge of mental power which opposed the spiritual understanding possessed by Moses, Elijah, and the prophets of Israel. Later, it opposed Jesus through the supposed power, pride and arrogance of Rome and the perverted sense of priesthood. In other words, a combined claim of mental, political, social, intellectual, and financial power, all backed by the original mental sin of animal magnetism or hypnotism. Moses, Elijah, and the prophets proved the superiority of spiritual understanding over the supposed power of enchantment and hypnotism in their day. Jesus proved entire dominion over it in his day. It is now the duty of Christian Scientists as his followers, or those who have learned some degree of spiritual understanding and power of Christian Science, to demonstrate in these latter days that the modern, swollen dragon is still unable to prove real power over God’s children. Animal magnetism has always been a lie about God and true prayer, but each follower of Christ will have to prove this fact.
Just as God, or the one divine Mind and intelligence, is pure Science and is therefore exact, scientific, and perfect according to fixed and absolute law in every detail or expression of Himself, so animal magnetism, or the one evil, claims to work according to law in every detail. Therefore, we must not fall into the error and subtle mistake of thinking that disease, accident, poverty, etc., just happen by chance. The remedy is always at hand, for every case, no matter what the claim of evil, there is always an exact scientific truth, or fact, that reverses the claim.
Whatever we need to understand of evil’s ways in order to destroy its effects, will be uncovered to us, because of the fact that “God is not mocked.” We do not need to ask to uncover it, for it will itself counterfeit the very spiritual fact, or truth, that appears to us.
It is the treacherous nature of evil to harm, but, if we cling to our revealed truth and reject the counterfeit, we have destroyed the power of evil to harm us, for it can never change or affect truth. Our safety lies in our constant obedience to truth in thought, action, desire and deed. This is the rejection of the evil which counterfeits the truth. We cannot fight it as something. We reject it as nothing, because of the allness of God.
As our day-star rises, and our individual Christ-understanding appears, the Herod of Jesus’ time seems to appear to defy our right to even exist. Step by step as our spiritual understanding unfolds in scientific order and law, the phase of evil counterfeits it, to be destroyed by revealed truth. We cannot hope to escape this warfare with evil once we are born in the flesh. Not even Jesus, who was half divine, could escape this struggle with and triumph over evil. Each one is tempted of evil in every phase until all sense of evil is met and mastered by reality, or good.
Perhaps the most fatal mistake that a Christian warrior can make in this warfare is to believe that evil circumstances, conditions and happenings, are just luck, chance, fate or accident. Everything is the direct result of thought, whether good or evil. One must be alert to this fact that evil in belief, is as scientific as truth in reality. It works according to false law, since God works according to true law. Mrs. Eddy once wrote in the earlier days of her discovery of Christian Science an article called “Historical Sketch”: “If any honest Christian Scientist can be deceived into thinking it is chance, not direction by malicious minds at work, that ignorance, instead of sin, is what he has to meet at all times, — this error prevents him from understanding enough of the question to insure his own defense, and leaves him in the power of animal magnetism, — perhaps temporarily relieved of his suffering, rejoicing in the hope of freedom which he afterwards find to be vain.” In the last edition of Science and Health she writes, “The march of Mind, and of honest investigation, will bring the hour when people will chain, with fetters of some sort, the growing occultism of this period. The present apathy as to the tendency of certain active, yet unseen mental agencies will finally be shocked into another extreme mortal mood, — into human indignation; for one extreme follows another” (p. 570).
There is no protection and no virtue in ignorance of evil and its phases. Each step of spiritual revelation is met by a phase of animal magnetism. In other words, evil claims to reveal in exact counterfeit its phases to contradict the revelations of Truth as all. It claims to be just as true as Truth. These claims must be met and mastered by Truth, just as Moses, by the more spiritual understanding of power, caused his mental concept of serpent to swallow up the serpents of the magicians and wonder-workers of the Egyptians.
Mrs. Eddy saw fit to include in Science and Health, a book in which is revealed spiritual truth, a chapter called, “Animal Magnetism Unmasked,” and saw the necessity of unmasking the claim and operation of evil as it tried to affect and destroy her revelation of Truth. It was her necessity as well as her duty to do this. It is also the necessity and duty of every student of Christian Science to understand and handle the claims of animal magnetism as revealed not only in this chapter, but throughout the entire textbook. The chapter, “The Apocalypse,” is full of revelation and instruction. Just as the second chapter of Genesis explains the working of animal magnetism in counterfeiting the truths stated in the first chapter, so Mrs. Eddy was compelled to explain that which would try to reverse and counterfeit her Truth.
The human race has been entirely beguiled, deceived and fooled by this subtle, treacherous and murderous mesmerism of animal magnetism, and until it understands that it has been deceived, it cannot get out of control of its deceiver. Just as long as the world believes that there is life, truth, substance, and intelligence in matter, and that this is good, it will never get free from the murderer. When the individual begins to understand animal magnetism, it tries its upmost to destroy him, for, when all belief in evil is destroyed, evil itself is destroyed. It is fighting to save its own false sense of existence. Whenever it is unmasked, its days are numbered and it works with bitter revenge and hatred to destroy its escaping victim.
The honest individual who has begun to be undeceived must awaken also to his God-given ability to cope successfully with the situation. Gradually he will find that every subtile or treacherous or murderous lie that evil presents, he has just at hand the Truth, a powerful, wonderful, beautiful and real fact to counteract the poisons, impurity, adultery and inoculation of mortal evil. By the might of divine Mind he rules out of consciousness the evil suggestions and aggressive attempts of evil to rule and destroy him.
It is a battle royal, but the honest Christian Scientist has infinite Mind, or God, and all reality on his side, while evil has nothing real to work with, and its lies never have a chance to exist and operate when confronted by a fact, or that which is real. Evil is always a coward when confronted boldly and courageously with Truth. It may seem, at times, as if the battle was between persons, but that is never true. Evil is as impersonal as God is impersonal, and we must never consider either God or evil as personal.
“The reduction of evil, in Science, gives the dominance to God, and must lead us to bless those who curse, that thus we may overcome evil with good” (No and Yes p. 33).
“Physical torture affords but a slight illustration of the pangs which come to one upon whom the world of sense falls with its leaden weight in the endeavor to crush out of a career its divine destiny” (No and Yes p. 34).
Hypocrisy, hypnotism and self-will in the name of Christian Science, and lust and greed for place and power in the ranks of Christian Scientists, is the “spiritual wickedness in high places” in this age. The qualities of mortal thought are brought into action and used by hidden mental powers working through Roman Catholicism, occultism, theosophy, Orientalism or animal magnetism, and handling those who have come selfishly in the name of Christian Science. Only the pure in heart and purpose, and the honest, can really withstand the swollen dragon of these days. With self-will, greed, and hypocrisy in one’s heart, one cannot be free from those mental qualities from without. Such as these are easy tools for the devil. It is the “Lamb” that slays the “wolf.” It is the innocence and honesty and good-will toward men that detect, check and destroy the hypocrisy and lust that would swallow up the Christ in this age. However, the “Lamb” can never be slain, for it is spiritual and real. Animal magnetism will finally disappear from the face of the earth, for it is not real and it has no true power. Because the Christ was never crucified, Christian Science can never be destroyed. It is destined to rule the world. Animal magnetism may delay the inevitable effect of the second coming of the Christ, but it can never prevent it from fulfilling finally the destiny of destroying animal magnetism. The time of this fulfilling depends upon Christian Scientists.
Evil calling itself something good, in the guise of intellectuality, or natural laws such as heredity, astrology, palmistry, horoscope, mental science, false metaphysics, etc., is seeking to do the work of Christian Science and is luring many students away from pure and honest channels of truth into these by-paths which can only lead into confusion and disaster. This is more or less the effect of mental work of theosophists, Roman Catholics, Oriental mental workers, and false Christian Scientists. The honest workers in Christian Science must see to it that their work is not lured away from them in this way.
There is one true law of attraction, adjustment and classification. This is the divine Mind, and this law must rule the lesser or man consciousness. Occultism, esoteric magic, hypnotism and mesmerism only lead to sin, disease, lack and death, and the weary seekers after rest, healing and real accomplishment, can find no lasting consolation from these false methods. Many Christian Scientists have gone after these false gods, believing that they are in advance of Christian Science, as that is their claim. We are warned in the Bible that evil will fool even the elect, and many of the elect are right now deceived and drawn away from the right path. Thus, honest Christian Science workers and practitioners are either finding themselves without work, or busy with those who are not willing or ready for the real truth.
The fields are white with real harvest of healing, and these false systems must not reap the harvest to the loss and dismay of the true seekers after Christian Science healing and enlightenment.
Animal magnetism is clouding the human consciousness with these lies, claiming that help really comes from these false systems. It is the essence of evil trying to destroy the light of Christian Science, or the Christ, Truth. It is Orientalism trying to swallow up Christianity. Christian Scientists must watch and pray that this ancient and very alert original sin takes nothing away from them. The Christian Scientist’s own progress depends upon the work he does for others as well as for himself, and therefore, he must see to it that his work cannot be allured from him by this evil.
Jesus said, “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.” He also said, “And a stranger will they not follow, but will flee from him; for they know not the voice of strangers.” In this same chapter (tenth) of John, Jesus said, “There shall be one fold and one shepherd.” Christian Scientists know that there is one Christ and the truth belongs only to the Christ. Nothing else can accomplish the salvation of humanity, and those who are lured away after these worst of all false systems, will only have to re-trace their footsteps with trouble and sorrow.
Christian Scientists who are honest and clear cannot be made to believe, through aggressive mental suggestion, that there is a power of attraction in animal magnetism or original evil to take their work or their reward away from them. It is not power, but the entire absence of power and intelligence. It is wholly negative, and must be rendered so by the one divine Mind as revealed in Christian Science.
It doesn’t make any difference how much theosophy, Roman Catholicism, Orientalism, materia medica, astrology, intellectuality, spiritualism, occultism, old theology, or any false mental science may claim to be and know something; it is all nothing trying to be and do something. The Christian Scientists will cling to Christian Science as the only healer, the only teacher, and the only help that can be or do anything real. It is the only help that humanity has, and the more we are called narrow-minded for knowing this fact, the more earnestly we must believe it. All of these systems are part and parcel of the carnal mind, and the carnal mind is enmity against God, or the one true Mind. Therefore, these systems are enmity against Christian Science and the true Christian Scientist. They must be vigorously resisted, reversed and destroyed, or the light of Christian Science will be darkened and the individual Christian Scientist will be forced to struggle against this dragon in the dark and very much alone.
A Christian Scientist must be a law unto himself, that this mental malpractice cannot make any conditions for him in any way. It cannot darken his awakening spiritual consciousness, neither can it reverse his work, growth or demonstration. It cannot embrace him in its false thinking, and make him believe any of its suggestions of lack, failure, discouragement or isolation. God has sanctioned Christian Science. He has predestined it to its work of salvation; therefore, it must accomplish its purpose. The honest Christian Scientist comes under this law also, and is protected from the dragon that would swallow up God’s anointed.
A Christian Scientist cannot be thrown into sex and sensualism by the aggressive mental suggestions of the enemy, for Christian Science leads away from this error into completeness and freedom as the reflection of the Father-Mother, God. All of these false systems lead to sex and sensualism, for they have no basis from which to work away from these beliefs. Christian Science is the only system ever taught that has a way out of the terrible bondage of sex and sensualism, for it teaches perfect man as possessing both male and female qualities as the image and likeness of a complete and perfect God, or Principle. In no other way can a mortal man or woman ever be made to realize and demonstrate their completeness and independence. It does not teach isolation and destruction, but it does free the individual from dependence and bondage to personality, limitations of sex, lack and loneliness because of it. It is the only remedy for mental, physical and financial lust.
It corrects, governs and educates men and women to understand their true complete and independent individualities. It brings about a higher association based on a more spiritual purpose, for all of its effects are from the standpoint of universal and unselfish good. Since there is no selfish lust in its purpose, there can be none in its effects. Therefore, all there is in sex must be made to serve a better and holier purpose than selfishness and sensualism. The revealed male and female of God’s creating must be found working together as one for the good of all, and not for the selfish pleasure and prosperity in matter.
The Christian Scientist cannot be made to believe evil of himself, or of anyone, through the aggressive mental malpractice of these many false workers of the dragon of this age. Only God’s thoughts can form conditions for the honest Christian Scientist.
An English officer, upon his arrival in India to take charge of troops there, was told he must pass a test in hypnotism, for if he could be hypnotized by an opposing officer, he could not retain his position in the English army. As he knew nothing about hypnotism, nor did he think anyone considered it other than charlatanism, he was amused rather than anxious. However, he asked another English officer for an opinion and was answered:
"Do I believe in hypnotism? I asked the same question of a highly educated and well-traveled East Indian on the steamer with me as we were putting into port in this same town. The day was extremely hot and sultry; the air was stifling. Before my question could be answered, there was a wild outcry from the upper deck. It was crowded with natives, naked but for the covering over their loins, who carried their weapons of war — knives and instruments that made terrific noises. All was bedlam. They were killing all their passengers with their knives and throwing the bodies on the deck below. The massacre was horrible beyond description.
Battle-scarred as I am, my experience seemed as nothing compared to the wholesale slaughter. I begged the East Indian to find a way out. He led me through a passage I had not seen before, downstairs, winding and narrow, which led to a part of the ship that for the moment seemed deserted. We were at the dock and from where we stood we could jump to the wharf, which we lost no time in doing. In less time than it takes to tell you, a storm was upon us; the wind, rain, and rush of sand were blinding. Out of it came hail — the stones sharp and heavy, cutting through my thin silk shirt and linen trousers until my flesh was cut and badly bruised. I urged my companion to leave me as I could not endure more and death would be a relief. At once I found myself standing quietly beside the East Indian as the steamer neared the wharf, waiting for his reply to my question. Then I realized he had given it — he had hypnotized me. He smiled that inscrutable smile of the Oriental and said, 'Yes, I believe one can be hypnotized.' I who had scoffed and ridiculed the Hindu's power to hypnotize, had then, neither have I now, anything to say. You ask me if there is no way to withstand their boasted power. Yes, if you will mentally hold fast to a basic truth — a fact incontrovertible — without wavering, they cannot control you."
Later on, when summoned to take the test, he was guided to a small building consisting of only one room about ten by twenty feet with two windows and a door. It was absolutely bare — devoid of all furnishings. An East Indian whom he did not know stood silently by the door awaiting his approach. The Englishman remembered his fellow officer's rule and held to the only fact he could at that moment recall — which was that two plus two equals four. As long as he concentrated on that nothing happened. Once he wondered what the Indian would do. Suddenly he saw him pick up a beautiful vase and dash it quickly to the floor, breaking it in hundreds of pieces. He realized he was being hypnotized, so he forced himself to concentrate on two plus two equals four. Again his thought wavered and he saw the pieces of the broken vase move, but when he held fast that two plus two equals four, he was safe. Finally the Hindu said, "I cannot control you — you are free."
"Ignorance of the error to be eradicated often subjects you to its abuse" (Science and Health 446:31-32).
"But there went up a mist from the earth and watered the whole face of the ground." (Genesis 2:6) The mist that went up from the earth, and watered the whole face of the ground, is the same mist that is going up now from the earth even as it did when Moses wrote the statement just quoted. The belief of life and intelligence in matter is still the Pandora box from which comes sin and sickness in all its forms and finally death, also all phases of social, economic, political, national and international distresses.
Not to a personal devil, but to the material senses, can be traced all the woes of the race both individual and collective. This is the enemy.
A simple statement of the mystery of evil by Mary Baker Eddy classifies all error as the suppositional opposite of good.
Mortal mind, seeking some method of defense at the time when Christianity was spreading over the face of all the earth, evolved the idea of forming a religion which would obstruct the growth of Christianity.
" ... in her was found the blood of prophets, and of saints, and of all that were slain upon the earth." (Rev 18:24)
In all probability there are but few Christian Scientists who give searching consideration to the question of Roman Catholicism and its great significance from the point of its activity in human consciousness. Many simply regard it as a Church, organization, religion, sect or cult. Not one of these classifications serves to convey any comprehensive idea as to its real character. There is, therefore, a vital necessity for a clearing up of this.whole question in a way that will leave no doubt as to its real character or genius.
Christian Science in its very nature challenges and refutes the evidence of the material senses. The senses are apprehensive of its presence and activity, and are naturally on the defensive, and are antagonistic. The whole warfare of the spiritually enlightened sense is in opposition to the material senses.
The most active and comprehensive c mbination of mortal mind's elements ever devised is found under the term "Roman Catholicism" or "Roman Catholic Church."
This organization exists for the elaborate and sole purpose of perpetuating the material senses. Let us consider the solemn ceremony of "Extreme Unction," otherwise known as the "Last rites of the church," administered to the dying.
The Priest arrives with all his tools to anoint the dying. Pure wax candles are lighted, and the man with the sanctified fingers proceeds to anoint the five material senses, and this anointing is done with holy oil (a mixture of oil and salt, both classified as preseivatives). It would be difficult for those who have not witnessed this ceremony to form any adequate picture of the intricate function of this ceremony: and all to what end — to save the soul — material sense.
"The suppositional antipode of divine infinite Spirit is the so-called human soul or spirit, in other words the five senses, — the flesh that warreth against Spirit. These so-called material senses must yield to the infinite Spirit, named God." (S&H 200:20) The eyelids, the ears, the nostrils, tongue, palms of hands and soles of feet are anointed separately and distinctly. This may convey a fair idea of the zeal to save soul or the material senses.
The aggregate of error or evil is expressed through all the medium of the carnal senses, and this concept of being is in the main promulgating through the theologies and is also found in all systems of human philosophy, ethics, sociology, and medicine.
It impregnates all systems of culture and education; and its strongest proponent is the Roman Catholic Church — system of ecclesiastical empire. For many centuries, many educators and statesmen have been endeavoring to locate and define this secret force and power and bring an end to its baneful influence on mankind in general, and certain nations in particular.
It remained for Christian Science to uncover this awful hell of demonology and occultism, and at the same time initiate its overthrow and final annihilation.
The whole purpose of Romanism is to perpetuate the belief of soul in body or material sense, and kill the Christ as expressed and operative in Christian Science. It is the most flagrant manifestation of antichrist. Romanism automatically and secretly resents Christian Science and under favorable circumstances it openly opposes it.
On Sunday morning at 10:30 or 11 o'clock you will see in progress, if you go into a Roman Catholic Church, what is called the "Pontifical High Mass." If you find the priest wearing yellow or gold colored vestments, or say purple or scarlet, you may know that in every Catholic Church in the world, the priests are wearing the same colors, and offering up their Mass for the same purpose — the intention of the Holy Father, the Pope.
All prayers offered up by the congregation are centered on the intention of the Pope. The intention may be one for the conversion of Protestant nations, or to save the world from Socialism, Communism, or Christian Science. Visit a thousand Protestant Churches the same day if you can, and you would hear a thousand different topics discussed in sermons.
The Romanists call the Mass their world-wide unity. No unity is found in the ranks of the Protestant Churches to antidote this mass-mesmerism of the High Mass, excepting the Christian Science Lesson-Sermon which is read in all Christian Science Churches throughout the world. (See the explanatory note in The Christian Science Quarterly, second paragraph, last sentence, wherein we find our Lesson-Sermon is divinely authorized.)
On this foundation Jesus said, "I will build my Church and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it."
Now, Christian Science teaches how to prevail against the gates of hell, but if we cease to build on the Rock, then the gates of hell prevail, for the Roman Catholic Church is building, not on the Rock, but on sand, the sand of materiality.
The Lutheran uprising was predicated on the fundamental proposition of the right of the individual to know God and to search the Scriptures himself.
Christian Science is the great emancipator of the individual and of the race.
The ordinary Roman Catholic layman is ignorant of what is going on; he is handled through secret occultism; he is victimized by ignorance, fear, superstition.
Recently an elaborate ceremony was held in St. Patrick's Cathedral giving great publicity and honor to a gifted young priest, who had just been ordained as one of the new order of priests established in India, trained in the art and science of occultism.
Mrs. Eddy says, "The education of the future will be instruction, in spiritual Science, against the material symbolic counterfeit sciences. All the knowledge and vain strivings of mortal mind, that lead to death, — even when aping the wisdom and magnitude of immortal Mind, — will be swallowed up by the reality and omnipotence of Truth over error, and Life over death."

These are some of the arguments that the mesmerists of Roman Catholicism are using. One must first see the discord as an argument of Roman Catholicism and what it stands for, and put God right where there seems to be Roman Catholicism, or a Roman Catholic, or a Roman Catholic church, for "the earth is the Lord's and the fullness thereof," so there is not a Roman Catho- lic church on earth, for God is everywhere and all is God's.
One should not mince matters. In every case that comes to one see the belief as a curse of Roman Catholic mesmerism and handle it as that and nothing else, no matter how long standing. If it is a child, it should be seen as a pre-natal curse of Roman Catholicism and handled as a curse mesmerically projected to kill.
This does the work. There is nothing else to meet the Roman Catholic curse, it covers all the Protestant world and every Protestant in it, and is the cause of all sin and sickness, and all hate of the Protestant Churches, for Truth is the hate of Roman Catholicism, and Christian Scientists are only a little wider awake than Protestants themselves, and they are sound asleep.
There is no specific curse to cause disintegration of tissues or organs. There is no curse from the mesmerism of Roman Catholicism to cause me to be electrocuted, no argument of tortured nerves, no nerve centers to cause nerve claims, to produce darkness, stupor, sleepiness, etc.
There is no pre-natal curse to influence sexual desires causing diseased sexual organs, producing morbific secretions.
There are no arguments from mesmerists of Roman Catholicism to push my feet from under me, to cause me to fall, or to fill me with the constant fear of falling.
The poisonous intention of Roman Catholic mesmerists or Roman Catholic church, male or female, cannot prevent buying and selling or cause failure or lack of business, or pervert success, or prevent me from healing myself or others.
There is a great struggle before us, and it is for life. I know what is coming. I dare not tell you what I know. You will know someday. The true Science, divine Science, will be lost sight of again unless we rouse ourselves.

Catholicism is brotherly love, while Roman Catholicism is the Pope's intention. Roman Catholicism is a false conception of Catholicism, a false conception of true theology. No cloister, circles, Jesuitism, priesthood, Papal power or school of cardinals or bishops can be a channel through which mortal mind can work or rule upon my consciousness or the consciousness of any individual to bind or hold you, or him, through ignorance, fear or superstition.
No Roman Catholic prayer or prophecy or anathema nor curse can dim, deaden, darken or confuse your consciousness, nor blur the Christ image in your thought. There is no God in any prayer of condemnation — no Christ in it — no Truth in it, and therefore, there is no power in it and you cannot fear it. There is no power or belief of power that can hinder you from any right achievement. Remember, your efficiency and capacity are unlimited, and no effort of evil to reverse the words and works of Christian Science can hinder your success. All ability, all achievement, all accomplishment are possible to men because they are man's. It is the law of man's being from which he cannot escape, even if he would, to know all that God, Mind, includes and is.

It is only by laying bare the atrocities of animal magnetism and malicious mental malpractice that the human race can be saved from a bondage that will so far exceed the history of the Israelites in Egypt, as the power of sin exceeds the inertia of matter to cause suffering.

These are some of the arguments that the mesmerists of Rome are using.
One must first see the discord as an argument of Rome and wipe Rome and what it stands for, out of and off the face of the earth, and put God where the lie seems to be, for the earth is the Lord's and the fullness thereof — so there is not an R.C. church on the earth, for God is everywhere and all is God's.
One should not mince matters; every case that comes, one should see the belief as a curse of Rome mesmerism and handle it as that and as nothing else — no matter of how long standing.
If it is a child, it should be seen as a prenatal curse mesmerically projected to kill (afflict, deplete, proselyte, intimidate, obsess, discourage, impoverish, frighten, mislead, beguile, rob, disable, incapacitate, age, dull, deaden, torture, infect, trip, ensnare, menace, deprive, weaken, enervate, poison, lull, handicap, side-track, delude, divert or pervert, exhaust, excite, attract, render inert, hypnotize, paralyze, stifle the will or intelligence of, disintegrate, disunify) — this does the work.
There is nothing else to meet. The Romanist curse covers all the Protestant world and every Protestant in it and is the cause of all sin and sickness. All the hate in the Protestant churches for Truth is the hate of Rome, and Christian Scientists are only a little wider awake than the Protestants themselves and they are sound asleep.
These are some of the arguments of Rome that should be wiped out. No ether or electrical vibrations (no fatigue, weakness, anxiety, lack of coordination, erroneous impulsion claiming to be divine impulsion, rebellion, nervousness, involuntary actions, reluctance, difficulty, appetite, disinclination, fear, limitation, failure, deformity, poverty, terror, disfigurement, frustration, intimidation, procrastination, temporizing, tardiness) no insanity, no infusion of poison into the system can be argued to me from the mesmerists, male or female, of the so-called church of Rome.
There is no sudden death, no insomnia, no paralysis to reach me through any argument of poison to cause disease or knotting of the spine. There is no mental torture called "foot-rot" to cause swollen, inflamed, twisted feet or ankles.
There is no dislocation of the ankle joints (hip joints, knee joints) — there is no mental argument to torture the eyes with red hot irons, to cause inflammation or loss of sight. There is no specific curse to cause disintegration of tissues or organs. There is no curse from the mesmerists of Rome to cause me to be electrocuted, no argument to torture nerves, nerve centers to cause nerve clamor, to produce drunkenness, stupor, sleepiness, etc. There is no prenatal curse called sexual curse to inflame sexual desires, causing diseased sexual organs, producing morbific poisons.
No argument from the mesmerists of Rome to push my feet from under me, to cause me to fall or fill me with constant fear of falling.
The pope's intentions, or the curses, oaths, or prayers (?) for the pope's intentions by the mesmerists of the Roman church, male or female, cannot thwart or limit me in business, or cause business failure or the lack of business, and cannot prevent me from healing myself or others.
The belief of animal magnetism is a false claim which I have the power to handle.
There is one Mind, one power, one influence, one substance, and one law. There is no mortal mind, there are no mortal minds. All thought, feeling, impulsion, decisions, volition, expression, animus, influence, evidence, relationship, have existence and continuity in the one divine Mind. There are no other thoughts than the thoughts of God. These thoughts are not transmitted, they are omnipresent. The claim that there is any other mind than God is a false claim. It has no basis, no cause, no principle, no influence or evidence, no expression, animation, impulsion or belief of any, even in belief. It never was created, is not self-evident, and does not exist.
The belief or claim that mind is mortal or that there is mortal mind or that there are mortal minds, cannot assert itself or exert itself or be asserted or exerted as a claim or belief of malpractice or malicious mental malpractice, by word of mouth, implication, innuendo, look or appearance, audible or silent suggestion or flattery, or by means of thought transference, thought projection, thought extension, thought waves, suggestibility, thought circles, by argument, infiltration, whispers or whispering campaign, or by any other means or method, known or unknown, named or unnamed, or nameless.
Mortal mind claiming or believing it can assert itself as opportunism or religion, as prayer or demonstration, theosophy, astrology, world conditions or combination of many things, cannot exert any influence or power. It cannot inflame, allure, attract, ensnare, lull, afflict, disintegrate — do anything, nor can it prevent anything from being done. It cannot give itself any power or influence by belief or silent utterance, by belief of invoking the aid of God, or by claiming to be the Christian religion, or a Christian religion, or by any appearance of saintliness or spirituality, or by asserting that it has the power of Christ. Neither can it operate as a philosophy, as Jesuit hypnotism, prayer, curse, anathema, or as the prayer for the members of the Catholic church, that the pope's intentions may come to pass, nor any way at all, in belief.
God is the one infinite, only Mind, revealed through Christ in Christian Science, uncovering error through Christ in this treatment and utterly obliterating its false claim to have influence, expression, existence, evidence, history or accomplishment.
I can detect and handle animal magnetism. I cannot be influenced to believe that I cannot handle it, nor that I have no time to handle it, nor that I feel too sleepy nor too ill, nor disinclined to handle it, not that there is no need to handle it, nor can any belief or claim of claiivoyance pick up or guess or in any way find out what I may be doing, or intending to do.
This treatment in Christian Science cuts off the claim of claiivoyance, clairaudience, interference, annuls its effort and annihilates its so-called law.
Malicious mental malpractice cannot handle me nor find out how I handle it.
There is no law of reversal. A Christian Science treatment cannot be reversed any more than a law of God can be reversed. Other is no law of reversal.

Spirit held in the grasp of matter is animal magnetism, the unreal in all its aspects, without power, presence or law, since Spirit cannot be held in the grasp of matter.
Romanism is a belief of organization, system, means and methods deemed important for the human race to be saved. It lacks inspiration and therefore lacks divine energy and can only live as a belief lives. A belief based on person instead of Principle has no reason for seeming to be. Without reason or Principle, belief is wholly mirage. We are told we must believe only what comes to us through understanding.
The premise of Romanism is the belief that man is an entity separate from God, and that without the Roman Church there is no point of contact with God. You have to have a God that can know evil, a man that is born in sin and conceived in iniquity in order to have a reason for Romanism. If you refuse to believe that God, good, can know evil, that man is not born in matter to be saved, to be healed, you cannot be the victim of Romanism, no matter how many seeming Roman Catholics are around you. Your decision as to what is true governs you.
Romanism also includes the belief that a statement of some kind, a prayer, or mass, operates as a law and power to bring about certain desirable results. Pray long enough and hard enough, and God will finally bestow His bounty. Christian Science reveals that the only thing which operates as law and power is divine Principle, the inseparable oneness of God and man, and that a knowledge of this is that Principle in operation as human experience.
Many Christian Scientists are tempted to believe that because the Romanists pray the clock around, even though it is to a God that has no more existence than a statue of Buddha, that that prayer will do something. The admission of that belief makes one a victim of that belief. It actually is Romanism, since that is the belief of Romanism. The only power in any belief is believing it, and when we believe it, we are its victims. What is called daily protective work by Christian Scientists, I am sorry to say, is not very different from the concept of prayer which the Romanist holds. He believes his prayer is effective, powerful to bring him what he wants and protect him in danger if he prays enough, or if it is God's will.
Unfortunately, certain Christian Scientists are still of the belief or opinion that a Roman Catholic's prayer is effective and will bring about what Romanism wants and what will be harmful to him, the Christian Scientist. Many Christian Scientists believe that their prayers are effective and powerful to bring about good matter, and if they pray hard enough they will keep the Catholic's prayers from harming them.
If one believes that Christian Science prayer is effective to change something, one misunderstands prayer, and a misuse of prayer is Romanism. You cannot call that prayer which admits power in evil and the need to do something about it. The only prayer in the universe that is of any value is the prayer which is Mind declaring itself, acknowledging its own infinite perfection and refusing to admit any belief of another prayer.
Belief is illusion, animal magnetism. Deny the belief that you could possibly believe in evil if there is but one Mind. In Science, we learn that there is no mind to believe in evil and therefore we do not avoid facing any belief of evil since we know it is pure illusion. Mind is one and all. There is no believer in evil. Refusing to have contact with Roman Catholics, as well as being concerned if we do, personalizes the claim of Romanism and enhances the claim. You must believe there is a believer in evil; you must believe in thought transference, or you would not care how many so-called Romanists were around. Whenever, wherever, the human mind is tempted to hold Spirit in the grasp of matter, this is Romanism, even when it is called Christian Science. " ... and sickness, sin, and death would be as eternal as God." (No and Yes 17:27)
Prayer in Science is the recognition, the acknowledgment of that which eternally is. Jesus' "humble prayers were deep and conscientious protests of Truth." (Science and Health 12:13-14) "Prayer can neither change God, nor bring His designs into mortal modes." (No and Yes 39:11-12) Prayer cannot change that which is, nor can it change that which is not. Through prayer, that which is comes to light, and that which is not fades away. The true understanding of prayer operates to prevent the false sense of prayer from seeming to have power or channel through which it can act. A belief cannot simulate power in the presence of Truth. The only Mind there is, never heard of the belief of Romanism. Roman Catholicism is a belief that organization is always working. There is no cessation to that particular belief called Roman Catholicism; of course, that does not matter. But if a person were unaware of it being such a belief, and simply ignored it, would that be Christian Science? If you knew there was no Roman Catholicism and absolutely knew it, you would never have to go into detail about it. If you knew as Mind knows, and that there is no human being in Romanism, that would be sufficient.
It is not intelligent and it is not scientific to make a reality of anything but God. It is always a claim, for you do not fight any opposition to Mind; Mind is not opposing itself. Do not lose your altitude when knowing the unreality of these claims, do not lose your altitude when you take cognizance of error. When you know the absolute unreality of Roman Catholicism, it blesses every Roman Catholic on earth. It must not be a contest, but it demands wisdom.
A spiritual idea is a spiritual idea right where cancer seems to be, or where belief opposed to Christian Science seems to be.
There is not a spiritual idea of Roman Catholicism any more than there is a spiritual idea of cancer. A corporeal man is not man, he is not man manifested. You do not find destruction in Christian Science, you find redemption, that is consciousness of one. Consciousness is fundamental, even in human existence, and that is where we do our redemptive work, not trying to make beliefs better, but replacing them. Do not heal disease; find out there isn't any. Do not heal a sinner; find out there isn't any sinner. In handling the belief of Roman Catholicism, do not fix your eyes upon it. Be the infinity and look out from Mind and see the glory and grandeur which is all there is to religion. Anything in the name of religion which is unlike this has no power which it may claim. Any good it can try to accomplish because of a sense of good is always a sense of matter.

Evil cannot attain any prestige, power, authority, or influence by falsely and hypocritically claiming to be the church. Whatever does not afford proof of its utility and is not found elevating the race and rousing the dormant understanding from material beliefs to the apprehension of spiritual ideas, thereby casting out devils — evils, and healing the sick, is not the church, and has no place in the church, no part in the activities of the church, no power, presence, or influence in the councils of the church. Christian Science is the church. It is the structure of Truth and Love. It is that which rests upon and proceeds from divine Principle. The Christian Science Cause is an institution that affords proof of its utility, and is found elevating the race, rousing the dormant understanding from material beliefs to the apprehension of spiritual ideas and the demonstration of divine Science, thereby casting out devils — evils, and healing the sick. Christian Science is the renewed fulfilling of the prophetic Scripture of Isaiah, "Unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given," a new spiritual idea is born to earth and the government shall be upon His shoulders: This spiritual idea shall rule all nations and peoples, imperatively, absolutely, finally with divine Science, and His name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, the Mighty God, the Everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace. Of the increase of His kingdom and peace there shall be no end. "Though gathering new energy, this divine idea cannot injure its useful surroundings in the travail of spiritual birth." (S&H 463:10-12)
Christian Science is the rock of ages and can never be removed. It is the stone laid in Zion, the tried stone, the precious cornerstone, a sure foundation. Christian Science is the stone the builders rejected, that has become the headstone of the corner.
This stone carved out of the mountains without hands, falls upon the false claim of a false church, a false theology, a false priesthood, a false science, a false medicine, a false healer, and grinds them to powder, and scatters them as chaff before the wind, and it waxes greater and greater until it fills the whole earth. Christian Science is the light of the world that radiates and glows into noontide glory. It is a city set upon an hill that cannot be hid. It is a city that lieth foursquare. It is the city that hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God. We have a strong city. Salvation will God appoint for walls and bulwarks. "Now is come salvation and strength and the kingdom of our God, and the power of His Christ, for the accuser is cast down."
Roman Catholicism is not the church. It cannot claim the church, nor claim to be the church. It cannot deceive mankind into believing that it is the church. It cannot maintain any power, prestige, authority nor influence over mankind by falsely claiming to be the church. Evil cannot glamour and mislead mankind by its ritualism, ceremony and sophistry and cause them to believe that it is the church. Roman Catholicism blasphemes and lies when it falsely claims that its institutions, superstitions and dogmas are the structure of Truth and Love. They do not rest upon nor proceed from divine Principle, hence they are no part of the church, and they cannot claim the power and authority of the church for they cannot do the work of the church, and are not doing the work of the church. The dogmas of Roman Catholicism are not the word of God that Jesus said is Spirit and Life. The teachings of Roman Catholicism afford no proof of its utility. They are not demonstrable and no Roman Catholic can prove them.
They cannot heal and they cannot save, and Roman Catholics are finding out that there is no salvation in their so-called church. Their dogmas cannot elevate the race nor awaken mankind to the understanding of spiritual being and life in God. Roman Catholicism is the structure of lust and hate, loathing the brightness of divine glory. Roman Catholicism is the abomination of desolation standing in the holy place. It is fallen and become the hold of every unclean beast. It is the son of perdition, sitting in the temple of God and showing itself that it is not of God, and it is denounced and cursed of God. The doctrines and institutions of Roman Catholicism spring from the worst passions and most remorseless motives that govern mortal mind, and they are the embodiment of spiritual wickedness in high places, and there is no Roman Catholic mesmerism that can hide this fact. Roman Catholicism is the product of a dark and cruel past. It is the outgrowth of ignorance, superstition, gross materiality and Egyptian darkness of the middle ages. This so-called church has not advanced one step in scientific knowledge of God and His Christ, and their teachings about God and salvation are characterized by spiritual ignorance, superstition, brutality, cruelty, tyranny, and mercilessness of the dark ages. The so-called Roman Catholic church is the embodiment of dishonesty, deceit, treachery, craftiness, animal cunning, hypocrisy, slander, lying. It is the outgrowth of subtle scheming, intrigue, and deceit of thoroughly unprincipled men. Its dogmas were promulgated by selfish and designing mortals, who had no knowledge of God and His laws. They were barbarians who were actuated by lust, avarice, greed, covetousness, and mad ambition of power. Roman Catholicism is the superstition and idolatry of pagan Rome, parading in the stolen vestments of Christ, and mankind can no longer be deceived by human will, brute force, lust, sensuality, envy, jealousy, hatred and revenge.
The false material and sensual teachings of Roman Catholicism cannot bind mankind with their depraved materiality, and lust of this world and then falsely and hypocritically claim to be the church. Roman Catholicism is the deification of mortal mind in matter. This false claim of mind in matter is not mind, is not truth, but error without intelligence or reality, so Roman Catholicism has no mind, hence no thinkers and no doers. Roman Catholicism is demonology, mesmerism, hypnotism and every form of ancient necromancy, sorcery, witchcraft, and magic, and it is denounced and cursed of God. It must go down. It must cease from off the face of the earth, and mankind must know that one God, the incorporeal divine Mind, is the only Mind and this divine Mind has all power. It is supreme on earth today, and rules in the army of heaven and among the children of men, and gives the kingdom to whom He will, and all forms of pagan and Christian idolatry must go down. Roman Catholicism's false claim of power over mankind rests upon superstition and ignoran e and fear that its false priests have engendered and fostered in their people, but the Roman Catholic clergy cannot perpetuate a state of ignorance, fear, and superstition among mankind in order to maintain their false claim of power over them.
The mesmerism of Roman Catholicism is broken. It can no longer make men afraid to think and prove all things. It cannot rob them of power to hold fast that which is good. The spirit of Truth is come. The Science of Christianity is here. It is working in every individual consciousness and searching out all things. There is no mesmerism of Roman Catholicism that can stifle or suffocate the spirit of scientific investigation working all over the world today, for it is the activity of divine Principle inspiring each individual consciousness with the spirit of Truth and cannot be Intercepted, interrupted or hindered. This activity of divine Principle in each individual consciousness is a perpetual aggressive law of annihilation to Roman Catholic mesmerism and to every false claim of a power opposed to the activity of good. Roman Catholicism cannot claim the church. It cannot enter the church, possess it, rule it, dominate, control and misgovern it; murder nor rob its best workers, and so destroy the church and its manifestation in the cause of Christian Science. Roman Catholicism through the belief of sensuous autocracy, hierarchy and male domination, cannot claim the Cause of Christian Science, possess it and enter the church through selfish, dishonest Christian Scientists, or establish itself as officers, teachers, or practitioners, and so perpetuate itself and work its abominations and make its lies in the ranks of Christian Scientists, for Christian Science is the law of God that operates unspent to annihilate every form or claim of evil, and cannot prosper, grow, progress nor succeed in the ranks of Christian Science. It cannot work nor rule in the consciousness of Christian Scientists, deaden their moral senses, stop them from resisting the claims of sin and so destroy them and their cause. Roman Catholicism lies and blasphemes when it falsely claims that the so-called church is the bride of Christ. The Roman Catholic church is the whore that rides the scarlet beast, full of the names of blasphemy foretold in the seventeenth chapter of Revelation, but St. John tells us that the horns of the beast (the belief of evil mind in matter) breaking the Ten Commandments are the flesh of the false woman. So Roman Catholic sins and blasphemies shall destroy and are destroying its false church.
The Roman Catholic church is not the mistress of "souls." It is not the "queen of hearts." There is nothing in its institutions and doctrines to meet the need of suffering humanity, nor satisfy the longings of the human heart to know God, and Roman Catholics are finding this gaunt want and turning away from the empty claims and superstitions and dogmas and seeking to know the God of Christian Science. Roman Catholic clergy cannot hold Roman Catholics to this false church by fear, nor by the domination of a sensuous will, for Roman Catholicism is not the dominator of the world, not the "deposit of knowledge," and its clergy have no power or authority, rule or control over mankind, for God is All-in-all and rules supreme on earth today. Dogmas and mysticism cannot silence the voice of Truth; they cannot silence the eternal longing of the human heart to know God. They cannot blind mankind to the glory, majesty, dominion and power of Jesus' life work, nor to their God-ordained right to follow in his footsteps and demonstrate eternal life.
There is no vicarious atonement; Jesus' atonement for sin was not a vicarious one. What he taught and demonstrated is an individual atonement and obedience to divine law. The atonement Jesus taught is the power of Truth working in each individual consciousness and destroying all materiality and sin. Jesus' atonement is the demonstration of what the true knowledge of God does for mortals. The dogma that mankind can be vicariously saved from sin, and ushered into harmonious being through Jesus' labors, sufferings and triumphs is stupefying delusion that has robbed the world for ages of the scientific way of salvation that Jesus suffered to reveal and demonstrate. This teaching of vicarious atonement is paganism, it is one of the crimes of Roman Catholicism, and it must be destroyed from the face of the earth, for it is a lie and there is no truth in it.
Roman Catholicism has no man, it does not know man, the image and likeness of God. It cannot use man, nor work through man, for man is not a Roman Catholic and never was a Roman Catholic, and no man was ever born in Roman Catholicism. There is no false claim of papal power of authority that can hold any man in bondage to Roman Catholicism by any false claim that he was born, baptized, or confirmed a Roman Catholic and "once a Roman Catholic always a Roman Catholic." There is no Roman Catholic birth. A sensuous multiplication of mortals is not birth.
There is no Roman Catholic baptism. The sprinkling of a few drops of water on the head of a child by a so-called priest is not baptism, and the mesmerism of an ignorant clergy cannot deceive mankind to believe it is baptism, and that there is any saving efficacy and divine significance or power in such a ceremony. There is no confirmation. This false claim "once a Roman Catholic always a Roman Catholic" is a lie, it cannot bind or hold mankind to Roman Catholicism or rob them of the freedom or power to know the God of Christian Science, for there is no confirmation, but the fulfillment of the fore-ordained, predestined, and established will of God. Roman Catholicism has no woman. The human will, lust, brutality, cruelty and male domination of Roman Catholicism cannot know or understand woman. It cannot know the infinite tenderness, all-pervading mercy, justice and grace of divine Love; hence Roman Catholicism has no woman, no Mother-God, and Roman Catholicism knows it. Christian Science is the eternal woman that brings forth the man child, the male child that rules all nations and peoples, imperatively, absolutely, finally with divine Science. The government shall be upon His shoulders and it shall destroy Roman Catholicism with its false claim of male domination. The earth is helping the woman.
The falsity and utter disloyalty of Roman Catholicism is being seen, and the glory and majesty and dominion and power of Christian Science is being understood, and Roman Catholicism cannot hinder it. Roman Catholicism has no priesthood. The only priest is the spiritualized man. Roman Catholic priests are not the spiritualized man, because they are not the priests of God, and there is no Roman Catholic priesthood. The false claim of so- called priests, that they are endowed with a special gift from God, thereby they have special power to forgive sins and to curse and to bless, is a lie. They have no such power and they know it. This false claim of power in the Roman Catholic clergy is demonology, mesmerism, hypnotism. It is not the power of God. It is the devil, the adversary of God, good, and it is denounced and cursed of God. It must go down and out. It must cease from the earth. The Roman Catholic priests cannot be self-deceived. They know they have no such power. They must repent, acknowledge their falsehood and forsake it. God never ordained a Roman Catholic priesthood and made them mediators between God and man, nor endowed them with power to curse what God has not cursed, nor bless what God has not blessed, nor to forgive sin that is not destroyed. There is no Roman Catholic sacrament, or penance that can destroy sin or save mankind from the suffering due for sin. Roman Catholics cannot pervert the word of God, nor teach their institutions that penance is the work that Jesus commended his followers to do. The only work that can save from sin is the destruction of sickness and death, through the right understanding of God and His Christ as demonstrated by Jesus of Nazareth. Roman Catholicism through its false claims of intentionally directed and educated mental malpractice, cannot destroy the majesty, dominion and power of Christian Science. It cannot darken the understanding of Christian Scientists, nor take from them the spiritual understanding of the Scriptures. Roman Catholicism is not a power. God is power and Roman Catholicism has no God, no Almighty. It does not know God, the one infinite all-power. It is a belief of many gods, many powers, many minds, souls, spirits, instead of the infinite God, the one all-power, Mind, Spirit, Soul.
There is no mesmerism, thought-force, or psychological influence emanating from the Vatican at Rome or from any Roman Catholic convent, monastery or hospital. There is no priest or combination of priests working in the Vatican or cloistered circles of Roman Catholic convents or monasteries to establish a universal papal authority whereby Roman Catholicism shall dominate the world and destroy Christian Science and the activities of good through Christian Science. Every effort of Roman Catholicism to destroy Christian Science and its activities of good is a law unto itself of self-destruction. Every effort of Roman Catholicism to establish a world-wide papal authority is a law of destruction to papal sin. Roman Catholicism teaches that the Pope of Rome is the vicegerent of God and rules the earth in place of God. They lie and blaspheme, and they know it.
No mortal can rule the earth in place of God. The Pope of Rome has no kingdom and he knows it. There is no papal Rome, no papal chair, no papal crown. Roman Catholicism, through the mesmerism of the blind belief in a papal power, cannot curse and bring to pass evil on Christian Science practitioners, their families, or their patients, either physically, mentally, or morally. They are not a creative energy or law and they cannot operate as a force or law or perpetuate Roman Catholicism or destroy Christian Science. There is no power in the papal curse, malediction, prayer or hate. The Pope of Rome has no power to curse Christian Science and the activities of good through Christian Science. The ignorant belief of a million mortals in the power of a papal curse cannot lend any power to such a curse or make it a thought-force to destroy Christian Science. The false claim of a million so-called Roman Catholics pronouncing and repeating a papal curse against Christian Science cannot give power to such a curse. God alone is power and rules the earth today.
In handling Romanism, or the false claim of it, we should never forget the great necessity of keeping it impersonal. We are not fighting people; we are not fighting anything; just handling a false claim of thinking. Someone once came to Mr. Kimball about it, and Mr. Kimball told him it should be like this: "The false claim of Romanism cannot operate through false belief of monk, Pope, cardinal, bishop, priest, nun, church, or congregation, through their belief of prayer, wish, rule, desire, intention, curse, anathema, prophecy, prediction, or expectancy to annul a Christian Science treatment, to render it void, or of none effect, or to produce any mental or bodily infirmity."
Christian Scientists should call it Romanism or Jesuitism, rather than Catholicism. The word 'Catholicism' means universal, general, whole, probably akin. One of the schemes of animal magnetism is to get us all to refer to it as Catholic. In reality the Christian Science church is the only Catholic or universal church there is.
The church of Rome calls its ministers Father, its students brothers, its women Mother Superior and sisters. By our calling them Catholics, we virtually include them in our family, identify ourselves with them, and so bring our thinking, to some extent, within their jurisdiction. It is the most psychological organization in the world. It has always worked mentally, and this accounts for what success it has had in putting down all organizations which have opposed it.
Throughout all the ages Brahma priesthood, black magic, black art, and all their kindred evils, have filtered through human consciousness, finally settling in Rome, and ever since, Rome has stood for the very essence of domination.
This false claim is just as powerless as any other error, but it must be recognized for what it is. It is just as bad to ignore it as it is to fear it. Mr. Kimball once said: "You must know that Romanism stands at your head with a gun, but you must always know it is loaded with sawdust." Our Science reveals the nothingness of this false claim, because it is not of God, and Science strips it of all power, action, influence, or law — leaving nothing whatever to fear, for it is not real.
In handling error, one of the most important things is to recognize the claim. Some confuse the word recognize with the word admit. We must never admit error, but we must recognize what it claims to be, then reject it by knowing its nothingness.
Romanism is really a phase of mortal mind calling itself good; mental malpractice calling itself religion and the way of salvation, and thereby endeavoring to gain the sanction of the whole human race, or a large portion of it.
There could not be such a religion without a wicked God, a God that they say is infinite, but yet knows evil, and if this be true you would have infinite, eternal wickedness. Romanism not only includes a wicked God, but a damned man, or else there would be no salvation in the Roman church.
This false claim is powerless because it is a negation, without influence or law. Mind is the only power, and Mind is infinite God. Hence Romanism is without substance or Truth, Mind, power, or Life, and is really neither thought or influence. Its belief of hypnotism, or hypnotic effort, or any other endeavor, known or unknown, whether it be on the part of one or many, or a mental mob of millions, is powerless to act or to be a law unto us, or to interfere with our work, our health or harmony, success or prosperity, for it is mindless, powerless, and unknown to God and His perfect creation. Our understanding of Christian Science is power, presence, and law, and is consequently a law of annulment and total extinction to the false claim of Romanism.
We are learning that the only way we can commune with God is through spiritual understanding, for God is Mind, and the only thing that is ever near God is His own spiritual ideas.
There is only one Church — "the structure of Truth and Love;" only one baptism, "the purification from all error;" only one priest, "the spiritualized man;" only one communion, our unity with Mind. Hence all claims of Romanism are spurious, false, unreal, powerless, and unknown to Mind and the Christ-idea. Knowing this, the Christian Scientist is always safe, protected, and beyond any of Rome's supposed activities — for God reigns and is supreme forevermore.

Every person who claims to be a Christian Scientist should be clear on this subject. We must get a sane and balanced view of this evil. Many erroneous beliefs are held about it all through the field. We cannot possibly ignore it, and no alert Christian Scientist is doing so.
Mrs. Eddy writes, "A genuine Christian Scientist loves Protestant and Catholic, D.D. and M.D., — loves all who love God, good; and he loves his enemies." (My. 4:14-16) This is the correct attitude to bring to your patients.
You will have to approach the subject of Roman Catholicism with love in your heart. In this system many false beliefs are held, such as Jesus is God, Mary is the Mother of God, the Pope is the representative of God on earth. They believe that Roman Catholicism is God's special means of reaching and dealing with men, whereas the fact is that Christian Science is the universal religion proclaiming impersonal Truth.
In Roman Catholicism the claim is that evil may be good, that evil may be done in order that good may come to the church; this is especially accepted as part of that system. They believe, therefore, that they need not necessarily keep faith with a Protestant. They claim to do what they please in the name of God.
The laity are distinctly different from the hierarchy. The laity are kept in ignorance and among them are many decent people, but as you get nearer to Rome, you will find a complete and corrupt political organization. The hierarchy holds that anything. they do in their interest is good.
We find in Miscellaneous Writings this statement, "The Christianity that is merely of sects, the pulpit, and fashionable society, is brief; but the Word of God abideth. Plato was a pagan; but no greater difference existed between his doctrines and those of Jesus, than today exists between Catholic and Protestant sects." (p 111:21-25)
There is a profound difference between Roman Catholicism and Protestantism. The Protestant clergymen have a totally different sense of good.
Roman Catholics are taught to take advantage of anyone. The real teaching is this: to flatter this one and jolly that one. It is not an infrequent thing to hear a person say, "The priest in our town is very friendly toward Christian Science." Of course -that is the way he works. Be wise and do not fall for that kind of remark.
In belief, they are the greatest organization in the world, and they try to hold the human race in a grip that they will never give up. All of the systems that have been devised to overcome that claim have failed. Either the Roman Catholic organization has been able to overcome it from the outside, or failing in that way, they have introduced in the inside some elements that have served to disintegrate them. That is the history of every effort that has been made to overcome that organization which would keep the race in ignorance and mental slavery.
Something had to be done; so long as a human organization could not succeed, there had to be some concerted effort or endeavor that would rest upon a basis that could not be shaken. Mrs. Eddy established her Cause, the purpose of which is to overcome visible and invisible evil, and that work requires attention.
But it is nothing to get excited about: do not think that you have to devote all your time to talking about Roman Catholicism. Don't talk about it at all. Even in our church, say nothing. Just keep still and do your work.
Never talk about malpractice. Absolutely never! Make no exceptions about this and you will be right. But handle it!
Handle it. This work must be done by us, because we see the subtlety of the claim.
The priesthood are taught and trained in their schools to use mental power. They know how to use the human mind. Their teachers are so-called clever and able men. While they do not have the Inquisition openly, they have it mentally. They practice this mental power on their laity and in confessional.
Protestant Ireland has less fear of this thing than we in America. Don't make too much of this claim and talk of it all the time. It is nothing.
They say that God, through the Pope, gives them power to forgive sins for money. Sin is forgiven only when it is destroyed.
They operate very largely through fear, and often cause temble disaster in the homes of the ignorant laity. Some of the hierarchy are clever and so-called intelligent men, and their schools of philosophy are well-equipped, but they know nothing of the divine Mind, and we have got them there.
Because of this well-trained will-power, they are the most signal power of evil. They are absolutely opposed to anything good.
It is almost unbelievable. In fact, we wouldn't believe these things if we didn't know them to be true of that organization.
They do not fear Protestants, but they fear Christian Scientists. They are afraid Christian Science will exterminate their religion, and it will. (See My 191:6-8; Misc. 172:16-17; S&H 242:15-20)
God is looking after Christian Science. Love protects all its ideas. God furnishes all thoughts to man. They think they can attack us mentally. They constantly suggest lust to Christian Scientists. They suggest it to their own laity. The belief seems to succeed sometimes, and you have to rebuke Roman Catholic influence. The claim of lust might be a belief of original sin. Original sin is mortal mind in its worst form.
It is of no importance that they curse. Have no fear of the curse. If a Protestant child is baptized by a nurse or relative, a claim has been established and must be broken. True baptism will take care of this.
The more debased will vehemently curse and try to imagine evil for an individual they would harm, or they will use the name of the person they would harm. They have images they malpractice on and stick sharp instruments into to make the malpractice effective. Foot-podding is another claim to make people lame. The budding priests are all taught such things, and are taught to handle Christian Scientists. They will sometimes center their thought and curse a single organ or every organ and work that way.
The treatment is to know there is no mental Inquisition; it has no person, place or thing. There is no malpractice at all.
Other religious bodies may be hostile to Christian Science, but they are not dangerous. They are not organized. (See Church Manual, Article 27, Section 4.)
We should not treat or teach anyone who has the slightest connection with Roman Catholicism at the time they apply for help. They must be free of this religious organization by the time they reach you.
Always handle this request for help with great love. The Roman Catholic Church says once a Roman Catholic, always a Roman Catholic. We do not say this. A Roman Catholic can break away and become a Christian Scientist, but always inquire how this connection was broken. The connection is a mental one. Have they definitely broken their connection with the church? The church holds them with superstition and fear, and they are in terror of the priest.
Some who come out of Roman Catholicism are not very strong, and for their own protection they should be well-grounded in Christian Science. While we should be careful, we should be just. It is always unjust to point out a person and say he is an ex-Roman Catholic.
Question: Why are Roman Catholic girls given as little education as possible and boys as much as possible?
Answer: That comes from an old error that believes that the male animal is naturally superior to the female.
When Roman Catholics come to you, ask about the baptism, consecrated ground, and so on, if they belong to a Protestant church, and how long it has been since they gave confession.
It is not enough for one to say he doesn't go to church or confession. Seemingly Roman Catholicism is an aggressive and trained system of malpractice. Its priesthood will try to follow up past members, even after they have joined the Christian Science church. Some temble tragedies have occurred through Roman Catholic and Christian Science marriages. Know that Roman Catholic baptism cannot hold them.
The Roman Catholic church would like nothing better than to have Christian Scientists fear them. Their mental work is nothing but a gigantic bluff, wholly made up of fear and ignorance.
The good mortal mind is one of the most difficult things we have to deal with. The Roman Catholic good is far more vicious than its evil. You must know that Roman Catholicism cannot deceive a Christian Scientist or anyone else.
Never give a position of trust to a Roman Catholic. They will work years for you to gain your confidence, then will come a systematic betrayal which is part of the Roman Catholic training. Don't take chances. A Roman Catholic is always taught that the end justifies the means.
Do not let your kindness of heart fool you. Beware of social relationships between a Roman Catholic and a Christian Scientist. Such a situation will go along well until some condition brings out a betrayal which no honorable person would do; it never fails. It is the Jesuit training. Whenever they can, they will discriminate against Protestants and replace them with Roman Catholics.

We cannot consider Roman Catholicism as a religion or a church; it is neither one. It claims to be both for the purpose of deceiving the race. There is no truth or love in that organization, and it certainly does not rest upon or proceed from divine Principle. It does not afford proof of its utility and is not found elevating the race in any respect; nor is it found rousing the dormant understanding from material beliefs to the apprehension of spiritual ideas.
That is not the object of the Roman Catholic hierarchy.
They have no intention of elevating the race. Quite the reverse. This organization is dedicated to the purpose of tearing down and destroying everything good and everything that stands for Principle.
Roman Catholicism is not a church. It is a disease, nor can it claim to be the church. It cannot deceive mankind into believing it is the church. It cannot make mankind believe that its institutions are any part of the structure of Truth and Love.
The ritualism, sophistry, dogmas and teachings of Roman Catholicism are not the word of God, but of Satan. Their teachings are not provable and have never been proved, and no Roman Catholic can prove them for they are not demonstrable. They cannot heal and they cannot save, and the laity are finding out that there is no salvation in Roman Catholicism or their so-called church. Basically, you could not have such a religion without a wicked God.
They say that their God knows evil and that He is infinite. If infinity knows evil, then you have an eternal infinite wickedness, so you have a wicked God in Roman Catholicism. Another thing, you must have a damned man in Roman Catholicism, or you cannot have salvation in the church. You must have a wicked God and a damned man with a priest between them, and that constitutes the Roman Catholic church. Right at the start it has no power, for there is no power except infinity, and infinity is good.
The doctrines and institutions of Roman Catholicism spring from the worst passions, the most relentless lust, superstition, fear and gross materiality. The teachings of Jesuit schools are characterized by spiritual ignorance, cruelty, tyranny, and the mercilessness of the dark ages. The so-called church is founded upon and is the embodiment of dishonesty, deceit, craftiness, animal cunning, slander and every evil work. Their activities are characterized by scheming, intrigue, and deceit. The hierarchy are thoroughly unprincipled men whose tools are human will, lust, hatred and dishonesty.
The claim of demonology is the deification of mind in matter. The only way to handle this evil is with great confidence and love, for no evil can stand in the presence of Love. The nature of Love is the extinguishment of evil.
Roman Catholicism is today making great efforts to bolster up its tottering rottenness. The thing is disintegrating to its utter extinction and destruction.
There are plenty of honorable men in that church who have never been touched by the teachings of the Jesuit schools. They have never heard of it. But the great majority in this country, especially those educated in the Irish priesthood, are given this deceit.
Do not be disturbed by Roman Catholicism. You cannot be touched by it if you do not believe in it.
Our treatment against Roman Catholicism is not to hurt them, but to save every Roman Catholic on earth. We are not at war with anything but spiritual wickedness. Handle this claim every day! Make a point to educate yourself along this line, but don't be a specialist.
Many Christian Scientists have made this claim very real by their wrong work, and that is exactly what Roman Catholicism wants. You are not awake to this claim if you are afraid of it, or if you fail to handle it in a systematic manner.
Christian Scientists sometimes talk error instead of truth, when they are taught that there is no error in Truth and no Truth in error.
This claim is nothing to be afraid of, for there is no Truth in it. Be calm and serene — sure in consciousness. They fear calmness. In fact, if you lose your calmness, you lose your Science.
Christian Science was established to break the claim that Roman Catholicism could darken human thought.
Roman Catholicism cannot interfere with a Christian Science treatment any more than it can stop the sun from rising. Roman Catholicism has no entity or influence; no social, political, financial, educational or philanthropical influence. Its claim of influence of any kind is broken forever through the revelation and demonstration of Christian Science.
It is a false claim and it is not acting in belief or at all; it is not, cannot, and does not annul, interfere with, disturb, delay or reverse the full demonstration of Christian Science. It is without being, substance, truth, presence, activity or manifestation in God's creation. The Roman Catholic church is powerless, mindless and lifeless. It does not belong to, nor is it a part of anything that is true or infinite. It is negation, nothing; therefore, anything that seems to be an influence in this belief is neither thought nor influence.
Any effort that is made by way of prayer, curse, anathema, hypnotism, human will, or any other effort is unknown to God, and man's realization that good alone is real, that good alone has power, presence, and law, is a law of utter annulment and total extinction to the belief that Roman Catholicism could in any manner, through priests, relatives, friends or neighbors interfere with the Christ, Truth, in human consciousness.
The mesmerism of Roman Catholicism is broken. It is nothing to be disturbed about. It cannot make men afraid to think. It cannot rob man of the power to recognize and hold fast to that which is good and true.

In un-knowing, un-seeing and annulling the curses and purposes of animal magnetism or Roman Catholic mesmerism, I have found that dwelling in the Truth of the first chapter of Genesis, that God blessed all that He had made, and that His law and purpose changeth not, annuls the curse upon His children — Christian Scientists.
Realize often that the one divine Mind does not think Roman Catholic mesmerism, hence no mind thinks it, and it has no mind to be, nor law through which to operate.
Realize often that God is the only head or intelligence of all that really exists, that the only church is the structure of Truth and Love, therefore the Roman Catholic hierarchy has no head, no intelligence, no church.
God never made the 'Red Dragon" — the counterfeit of Christianity — hence it is not made. (See Unity of Good, page 20.) It is not real, true nor actual, and I need not fear it. Neither through curses nor prayer-blesssing (upon the Pope's intention), wish, prophesy, anathema, nor desire, can Roman Catholicism act, for it can only act through matter, and there is no matter.
The Red Dragon is a mythological monster.
We need to be very clear upon the nothingness of matter; often to translate matter into Mind. "Science, understood, translates matter into mind," our Leader tells us in Miscellaneous Writings. "This rejects all other theories of causation, restores the spiritual and original meaning of the Scriptures, and explains the teaching and life of our Lord. It is religion's 'new tongue' with 'signs following,' spoken of by St. Mark. It gives God's infinite meaning to mankind, healing the sick, casting out evil, and raising the spiritually dead." (p 25)
Christianity is Christ-like, only as it reiterates the word, repeats the works and manifests the spirit of the Christ." (Mis 25) In our mental work we discern all that there is of animal magnetism. "Adhesion, cohesion, and attraction are properties of Mind." (S&H 124) "Atomic action is Mind, nor matter" (Mis 190); that Mind "whose attraction is Love, whose adhesion and cohesion are Life" (S&H 293); so that we may always see that it is but malicious animal instinct talking matter and laws of matter. Roman Catholicism, we must know, cannot act through any material law, for there is no matter; nor is there any so-called law of astrology, for God alone governs the planets as well as man; nor is there any sexual law, for man is wholly spiritual and subject only to moral and spiritual law. There is no other law.
The mob or mass thought of priests' prayers — Catholics, Shintoists, Buddhists, Hypnotists, Spiritualists, etc. — cannot intimidate God, and He is backing up His ideas; nor can they bribe God to cease being omnipotent, omniscient and omnipresent, (all-powerful, all-wise, ever-present); nor to divide His all-power with the aggressive suggestion that He does divide it. Roman Catholic mesmerism cannot displace God's government nor interfere with His watch over His own; nor can human will (serpent, beast) give any power to wicked devices or purpose, for the will of God preserves in perfect harmony and security all that He hath made.
All so-called power is taken away from the wicked devices of the enemy. Bombs, tanks, guns, etc., are powerless to kill God's ideas, standing with Him for the highest form of government. The serpent is human will. But however collective the human wills of the enemy, no matter how many serpents are joined together, they are still human will — malicious animal magnetism — and are powerless before the divine will, God, the only power, the only Mind.
Human will goes forth to battle with midnight and tempest. It is the one that beateth the air. It is powerless before Truth, which says to error, "Thou shalt surely die."
God's children are forever "honest, unselfish, loving and meek," and because divine Love fills all space, there is no contagion of evil by which Christian Scientists can catch disease or Romanism or embody its state of mind, which is the Adam man and the whole Adam dream. Spirit's all power enables us to resist this claim of the antichrist, that it can be our very selves and our beloved Cause.

All the evil that ever seemed to be can never destroy one iota of good. Because Roman Catholic mesmerism gives no quarter and embodies all evil, it can be wholly and successfully resisted only by its opposite — boundless love for God and man, "absolute consecration of thought, energy and desire" which take hold of infinite Spirit intelligently, dropping all illusions and desiring and seeking only "the bliss of loving unselfishly, working patiently, and conquering all that is unlike God." (S&H 262)
The astute cunning of the crafty counterfeit of the one church of the one Lord, one faith, one baptism, is wiser in its generation, as of old, "than the children of light." We need to awl:!ken ourselves to discern its shape and to resist its curse and perpetual false arguments as aggressive, not .passive, malicious mental malpractice. And because good alone resists evil, we cannot be too much on the alert nor pray too earnestly (as Mrs. Eddy asks us to) for more grace, obedience and love, giving up all to God, until divine Love has blotted out of our hearts the last affinity and infirmity, so that when Satan cometh, he shall find nothing in us and we shall touch the hem of her garment who has taught us the way.
Every discord is the result of the arguments of Roman Catholicism. Wipe out Roman Catholicism and what it stands for from the face of the earth, and put God right where the lie claims to be, for "the earth is the Lord's and the fulness thereof." God is right where our enemy seems to be, and He governs all, whether they know it or not, believe it or not, wish it or not.
Every case is the result of the curse of Romanism and mesmerism, so handle it from that standpoint no matter how longstanding.
In the case of a child, handle a prenatal curse of Roman Catholicism, and as a curse mesmerically projected to kill. The Roman Catholic curse covers all the Protestant world and every Protestant in it, and is the cause of all sin and all sickness.
No ether or electrical vibrations, no insanity, no fear, no fusion of poison into the system, can be argued to me from the mesmerist (male or female) of the so-called church of Roman Catholicism. There is no sudden death, no fear, no insult, no paralysis to reach me through any arguments of poison to cause disease by knotting of the spine. There is no mental torture called foot rot to cause swollen, inflamed or twisted feet or ankle joints or hip joints. There is no mental argument to torture the eyes wit red-hot irons, to cause inflammation or loss of sight. There is no specific curse to cause diseased bones, or to cause disintegration of tissues or organs or flesh. There is no curse from the mesmerists of Roman Catholicism to cause me to be electrocuted, no argument of tortured nerves, no nerve center to cause nervous excitement, to produce drunkenness, or sleeplessness or sleepiness or stupor.
There is no prenatal curse called sexual poison in the system, no argument of mesmerism of Roman Catholicism to push my feet from under me, to cause me to fall or to fill me with constant fear of falling.
False prayers are no prayers at all. They cannot be made manifest through Jesuit mesmerists of the Roman Catholic church, by either male or female, nor can they thwart, limit, or obstruct me in business, or prevent success, and cannot prevent me from healing myself or others.
Declare each day that there is no local church of Roman Catholicism that can be a channel through which to reach Scientists or Protestants, because there is no Roman Catholic church. The lie has been uncovered by Christian Science and has been absolutely annihilated.
There is no Roman Catholic or Roman Catholic church on earth now, for God is everywhere and God is All-in-all. "The earth is the Lord's and the fulness thereof." Therefore the Roman Catholic church is no-where, death is no-where, curses, etc. are no-where.
Catholicism means brotherly love. Roman Catholicism is the Pope's intention. Roman Catholicism is a false conception of Catholicism, also a false conception of true theology. No so-called material law such as cloistered circles, priesthood, papal power or Roman Catholic prayer can govern, control, manipulate, work upon, or rule any consciousness of any individual to bind or hold him, or me, through ignorance, superstition or fear; no so- called Roman Catholic curse can dim, deaden, darken or confuse man's consciousness, or blur the Christ image in his thought.
There is no God in Roman Catholic church or prayer, no Christ in it, and therefore no power in it, or fear of it. There is no power or rule or volition or purpose or argument or control apart from God.
The belief of Roman Catholicism has no church, no Pope, no priest, no nuns, no man, no woman, no child, through which it can act or upon whom it can act. Holding to these thoughts will help us to free others from the bondage of Roman Catholicism and to realize that man is not in bondage to ignorance or anathemas.
Roman Catholicism can make no declaration, prophecy, argument, curse or anathema to hinder me from healing every case that comes to me, because I have the understanding to heal. There is no power that can hinder or restrain me from right achievement. Remembering that God is our Mind, we should know that our capacity and efficiency are unlimited, and no efforts of evil to reverse the work of Christian Science can hinder my success. All ability, all achievement, all accomplishment are possible to man because they are man's inheritance. It is the law of man's being from which he cannot escape, even if he would, to know all that God, Mind, includes, is Romanism has been defined as the Stock Company of error.
It includes on its working board all the devils making up animal magnetism or the carnal mind, the expressed sum total of "enmity against God." It is animal magnetism in concrete form or utterance doing business over the whole world.
Catholic priests are past masters in hypnotism, and no other organized partnership of evil is so practically alive to the seeming power of combined or mob work of the hberated mortal thought.
In the battle of Armageddon now upon us to be fought to the finish, the army of the church of Rome embodies and constitutes all the forces of evil now working as one, never asleep, always busy; and its vast amount of conspired, liberated and increasing mortal thought, driven at us on the current of human will, comprises and individualizes the working of animal magnetism gathered together in solid opposition to the activities of Life, Truth and Love.
By reason of the spiritual ignorance and sleepiness of the mild beliefs of evil, such as Protestantism, materia medica, etc., the Roman Catholic dragon overpowers, possesses, and utilizes them all, setting their pace and acting through their laws, to carry out its purposes — thus, becoming the total enemy of Christian Science.
Romanism is more thoroughly aware that Christian Science is its destroyer than we are, and so it is resisting Christian Science with the baffled rage of the wild beast in its death struggle.
Knowing the effects of many minds working as one in willing the anathemas upon us, we discern what legislates our domestic, physical and financial demonstrations as oftimes difficult.
Divine Mind is my source of supply, therefore my supply is infinite, is now, and is available to use now, and it is my business as God's perfect child to express intelligence, to express it at all times, every minute, and nothing can prevent me from expressing it. God has unlimited channels, laws, methods and plans, through which to bless, sustain, and enrich, employ, promote, supply, and compensate all His ideas. Mind is a law of perfection, completeness, life, strength, vigor, vitality and harmonious activity to its idea, man, and to body, and to all that is included in body.
Mind is the law of extermination, elimination, to the beliefs of impurity, abnormality, discord; of accumulated impurities and morbific secretions. Mind is the law of elimination to the belief of inefficient or incomplete elimination, and to the belief of abnormal retention and secretion and of animal substance or morbific poison.
This statement is a law of God and cannot be reversed.
There is no hypnotism or mesmerism, nor Roman Catholicism to operate through, no activity, energy, law or mind to give operation to hypnotism or mesmerism, and no Roman Catholicism to operate or have belief of operation.
The following was published in a newspaper in Cremon, Italy in July, 1898. It is titled "A Complete Statement of My Conversation with Cardinal Ferrario of Milan, Italy."
In July, 1898, I was invited as editor of the Roman Catholic paper "Vassillo" to attend the congress of Catholic press in Milan. After the public session, I had a private audience with Cardinal Ferrario of Milan.... In his conversation covering the attitude and plans of the church, he stressed the point that he was not voicing his personal views, but the attitude of the Vatican in political matters. Among other things he said:
"What we fear and consider as the greatest hindrance to our plans of world domination is Protestant England and Protestant America. These two great powers, combining their strength and their moral influence in the world, constitutes an unsurpassable barrier to our onward march.
"But of the two we fear America more, for in that country, along with the separation of church and state, the idea is predominant that the state is superior to and independent of the church.
